Arizona Cardinals linked to new quarterback name (Bears back-up Tyson Bagent)

  1. I am a Bears fan. Bagent reminds me of former Bear and Cardinal Blaine Gabbert. A fine backup. A fine third option. A fine practice squad guy.

Not a 17-week NFL caliber starting quarterback.

  2. I know what everyone’s initial reaction will be, but Bagent is actually a good QB.

He takes care of the football, is accurate, and has enough athleticism to not be a pylon.

He doesn’t have the biggest arm, but if he got 17 starts with the Cardinals I don’t think the consensus at year end would be “we need a new QB”.

  3. What a joke this franchise is. None of these options are even as good as Kyler, let alone better. Getting rid of Kyler is just making the team worse in exchange for what, saving Bidwill money? Tyson Bagent might be the worst name I’ve heard yet, he’s a D tier college QB whose looked awful in his 4 games at this level AND he’s under contract, so we’d have to give up resources to trade to get him. Even if its a 7th round pick, why give up resources at all when you’ve got a better player already under contract?

As I see it, there are 4 possible outcomes to this season:

    1) The team moves on from Kyler – Next season is lost before its begun due to us having no access to even remotely decent starting QBs to replace him this year and our being burdened by a ton of his dead cap, but at least we’re well positioned to get a better QB in next years deeper QB draft.

    2) The team stays with Kyler and he’s bad or gets injured again – Next season is lost, but at least we’re well positioned to get a better QB in next years deeper QB draft, and because Kylers contract gets much more palatable next offseason, he’s a much more tradeable (or cuttable) asset.

    3) The team stays with Kyler and he’s “okay” in MiLF’s offense – We have a chance next season, and if we want to move off Kyler the following offseason to chase a QB in the draft, he’s easier to cut. We’re also much more likely to get value back in a trade.

    4) The team stays with Kyler and he’s good in MiLF’s offense – We have a real shot of making noise next season, and we’re better positioned going forward because we don’t need to use high picks on QBs looking for a replacement. If for whatever reason we do still want to move off him, now we’re selling high when his trade value is peaked, able to convert his contract into real value.

Even if you think outcome 4 is impossible, I don’t see the value in forcing outcome 1 over 2 and 3. Outcome 2 is largely a wash, outcome 3 is almost certainly an upgrade over outcome 1. The one real value I see outcome 1 having is that it saves Bidwill some money over option 2-4 but is that really want the fans want? To save Bidwill some money?

“But I’m sick of watching Kyler play!”

Personally I think his biggest issue is not his play but his availability, so I can’t understand this logic, but even if true, can you really say you’d rather watch Tyson Bagent play? Because I don’t.
