Ovechkin didn’t come back to Washington with a decision on his future beyond this season. Ovechkin, the NHL record holder with 919 regular-season goals, is in the final season of the five-year, $47.5 million contract he signed in 2021, leading to much speculation about whether this will also be his last season in the NHL.

“No, I don’t know yet,” Ovechkin said. “We have to make a decision. We have to talk with the family, with (Capitals owner) Ted (Leonsis), [general manager Chris Patrick], and then we'll see.”

  1. Gearing up for playoffs Ovi is *always* the best Ovi, and it’s been clear for nearly a decade that he doesn’t go as hard as he can in the first few months of the season. I do not think he would be healthy enough to compete at this level if he didn’t do that. At some point we have to imagine it’ll stop, but I’m counting on a heater final 20 games.

  2. I definitely see him signing a 1 or 2 year contract for his final ride. I’d like to see him be more of a PP specialist that splits top line minutes with a guy like Leonard. He certainly doesn’t need to be playing 18 mins a game anymore, but he’s still a point producer at the nhl level.
