49ers combine takeaways: Not a robust market thus far for Mac Jones

> That leaves the Vikings, Miami Dolphins, New York Jets and maybe the Atlanta Falcons looking for a starter, but they very well might prefer a dirt-cheap option this year over trading for Jones and then extending his contract. The Vikings are said to be considering Anthony Richardson, Kyler Murray and Geno Smith — the last two of which are expected to be cut — as well as Kirk Cousins and Tua Tagovailoa to come in and compete with J.J. McCarthy. If the Arizona Cardinals can’t land Willis, they might even turn to Jimmy Garoppolo, who has ties with new coach Mike LaFleur.
> Though Jones was very sharp last season, completing 70 percent of his passes in eight starts, there are still some skeptics.
> “The 49ers gonna throw in Kyle Shanahan in the deal, too?” one general manager asked on the other side of town from Prime.
It seemed like only potential suitors were the Vikings, but given the QBs who are about to be cut, I doubt they want to give up serious draft capital.
I’m shocked. Shocked!
Well, not that shocked.
Would be fine to see him get paid, but if we keep a quality backup who can provably keep us afloat if things go south, I’m fine with that too.
He should be fine!:)
Dieter was right
they trick yall
Dieter Kurtenbach has been saying this for a while. A lot of the league is real skeptical of Jones, which makes sense to me. He won us a lot of games, but I’d say his only standout games were against the Rams (real solid performance), and the Giants (its the Giants). Most of his other performances where pretty mid. We just had a defense at that point that could shut down opponents.
Worst case scenario is we have a great backup.
Keep him. I think once he leaves after next year we’d get a comp pick for him. No need to dump him for cheap
Who would be our new reclamation project? Aaron Rodgers?
What’s kind of funny about this conversation is that it feels inevitable that JJ will be our backup QB in 2026. He fits the exact pattern of Darnold and Jones.
You have to be exceptional with Kyle to be trusted to be good away from him. Mac was good with Kyle but not exceptional. So when you take him away teams aren’t sure what they’ll get with him.
