The Boston Red Sox may be dealing with another pitching problem, as reliever Vinny Nittoli is dealing with a significant injury concern.

According to Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald, Nittoli has experienced elbow discomfort during his most recent appearance. The issue has made the team shut him down as he looks to get options about what’s next.
“Vinny Nittoli experienced elbow pain during his last outing on Saturday against the Minnesota Twins and has been shut down, Alex Cora said on Wednesday. Nittoli underwent an MRI on Tuesday but the club is still awaiting the results.”
According to MLB Trade Rumors’ Anthony Franco, surgery is on the table.
“Red Sox reliever Vinny Nittoli is weighing Tommy John or internal brace surgery, reports Tim Healey of The Boston Globe. The righty has been diagnosed with ligament damage in his elbow and is seemingly headed for a season-ending operation,” he wrote.

Any elbow concern brings problems for pitchers. Even minor issues can be a year-long process, which is what this sounds like it could be if he goes the TJ route.
For Boston, Nittoli could’ve been a decent piece for a team always needing pitching. Losing him for an extended period of time would be far from ideal.
