James Mirtle on the Leaf Report says the Leafs are going to change the coach for sure and the longer this goes on the more likely it is they change the GM as well

  1. The gm change should be first if we want to have a proper free agency and draft.

  2. The fact that firing Treliving is not a foregone conclusion at this point is extremely worrisome. This franchise is going to be fucked for a while.

  3. Treliving should have been fired last Friday.

The fact that it even in question now is insane.

  4. If they let Sullivan or Lalonde interim, they may be lulled into a false sense of security due to a coach firing bump and keep Treliving. At the same time, they could really use extra time vetting candidates because last time they switched things up between the end of play and the draft, it went terribly.

So my idea would be to fire Berube and Tree at the same time ASAP. Pridham interim GM plus interim coach and shut down a few guys so they don’t have the talent to outplay the coach firing bump. Knies is playing hurt and can be shut down, start there.

  5. Hopefully they promote Pridham. Could be the next hidden gem to be a GM, and won’t cost them as much as hiring someone from the old boys club.

  6. Yeah Treliving has only shown he’s not an NHL caliber GM over a span of 12 years, you really have to give it more time

  7. The leafs consistently and steadfastly refuse to do the right thing until all other options are exhausted and it’s far too late (refusing to try and move Mitch until the last possible moment and only after his NMC kicked in being the most egregious example). This team is run by morons

  8. The job is not done, the Tank Commander and Chief is on a mission. We’re are witnessing the greatest tank operation in modern history.

  9. Mcmanns comments really seemed like shade towards Berube. I don’t hate him but he’s clearly the wrong fit for the group. Knew the treliving hire was awful the second it happened

  10. That Treliving interview where Kyprios asked him if there was a plan – and the answer was “there will be”…

That reminded me of the Carney quote about “if you’re not at the table, you’re on the menu.”

Treliving isn’t at the table. It almost felt like he figured it out during the question.

  11. Whatever your feelings for coach or manager are, leaking this stuff to the media is gutless!

If MLSE wants to fire them then do it all ready. If they’re not in the future plans, why keep them around?

This season has been brutal on the ice, but the off ice stuff might be worse.

  12. It will be both and I think this decision was made some time ago. It’s the only plausible reason Berube is still coach.

The uppers knew the season was lost and due to BT’s bad trades, there is no way out of it short of getting to the bottom and keeping the lottery protected pick.

Any new GM hire is going to come in and make significant changes, including hiring their coach. Hiring a new coach and then immediately firing the GM is poor hockey ops. Get this one done and over with and figure out what you can do in the summer depending on whether or not you’ve given your pick to Boston.

  13. At this stage I assumed they were riding both guys until season end, after which both will be simultaneously fired.

  14. keep them till we get our top 5 protected pick back this is the draft we want to be in

  15. Can we fire Pelly too while we’re at it? This shit is going off the rails on his watch too

  16. It’s obvious Berube has lost the room for quite some time lol, McMann’s comments confirmed it too. I am curious if we do manage to land DeBoer. Fans want him, as a Texan and Stars fan I’d have to say he was pretty good with the Stars too. But then again everyone thought Berube would be awesome here and it flopped. DeBoer’s got the game 7 streak though, so he’ll either break the game 7 curse in Toronto, or Toronto will break his streak.

  17. I’m genuinely curious if a GM has ever been fired this fast before(?) Treliving has been here two years and it’s a complete disaster. Should never work in the NHL again after this and Calgary.

  18. In the summer of 2024 when we signed OEL, Stolarz, and Tanev, who would have thought we’d be here with Tre? We then went on to win the division and come within a game of the ECF. I know everybody shits on him in Calgary but I remember reading they had the most games played by players they drafted in his tenure in the league. The defense when he left was Hanafin, Tanev, Zadorov, Andersson, and Weegar. I never thought he was a great GM but I thought the criticism was quite unfair.

That was until the last year. The last year has been an absolute shitshow. The 2025 deadline was awful. The UFA signings this year were awful. It was failure after failure. Then we see this year play out and nothing happened to fix it the entire time. Ample opportunity to fire the coach or make a trade, nothing happened. Then this deadline came and went with a whimper.

I am not willing to go as far as others against him for his time in Calgary or even early time in Toronto. Some things were out of his control in both cities – Gaudreau, Tkachuk, Adam Fox wanting to leave, the Marner situation…but this last year he has failed so miserably you simply have to fire him.

  19. There is no way Berube and Treliving survive this if you ask me. They can salvage this situation if they spend time looking for the right coach and GM. The way they are playing, they almost need to get a top 5 pick now. We still have Matthews, Nylander, Knies, and two goalies who have had down years. The biggest issue for me is our defense needs to be restructured completely and we need to add some better contributors on offense. Too many bottom 6 players who contribute nothing.
