The Cincinnati Reds finalized their 2026 Opening Day roster on Saturday with a series of decisive cuts, reassigning outfielders JJ Bleday and Rece Hinds, right-handed reliever Zach Maxwell, and catcher Will Banfield to minor-league camp. These moves cleared the final hurdles, locking in left-handed reliever Sam Moll and veteran first baseman Nathaniel Lowe on the 26-man roster ahead of the March 26 season opener against the Boston Red Sox at Great American Ball Park.
The bullpen battle was the clearest. With Caleb Ferguson sidelined by an oblique injury and the Reds carrying seven relievers alongside six starters (Andrew Abbott, Nick Lodolo, Brady Singer, Rhett Lowder, Chase Burns, and Brandon Williamson), one spot remained between Moll and Maxwell. Moll, out of minor-league options and sporting a scoreless spring with sharp command, earned the nod as the lefty specialist. Maxwell, despite a solid camp, heads to Triple-A Louisville where his development can continue without risking roster flexibility. The rest of the ‘pen—Emilio Pagán, Tony Santillan, Connor Phillips, Pierce Johnson, Graham Ashcraft, and Brock Burke—had already locked in. Moll’s inclusion provides critical left-handed depth in a group otherwise heavy on righties.
On the position-player side, the final bench decisions favored experience and roster control. Will Benson and Dane Myers had already secured spots, joining Jose Trevino as locks. That left Bleday and Hinds—both of whom posted strong springs—competing with Lowe for the last utility roles. Both young outfielders possess minor-league options, allowing the Reds to send them down without losing them. Bleday, despite flashes of power, still carries last year’s struggles, while Hinds returns to Louisville after a promising 2025 AAA season and solid Cactus League showing. Their cuts, though disappointing to fans who watched them rake, reflect prudent asset management.
Nathaniel Lowe, the non-roster invitee and former Gold Glove/Silver Slugger winner, gets the final bench spot. The Reds will select his contract (likely by placing Hunter Greene on the 60-day IL to free 40-man space). Lowe’s veteran presence, left-handed bat, and first-base versatility add immediate depth behind Sal Stewart and Spencer Steer while providing lineup flexibility. His opt-out clause made the decision urgent; cutting him risked losing a proven big-league contributor to another club.
The resulting roster blends youth and savvy: catchers Tyler Stephenson and Trevino; infielders Matt McLain, Eugenio Suárez, Ke’Bryan Hayes, and Elly De La Cruz; outfielders TJ Friedl, Myers, Steer, Noelvi Marte, and Benson; plus Lowe and Stewart at first. Manager Terry Francona now has a balanced group ready for Opening Day—lefty relief secured in Moll, veteran insurance in Lowe, and high-upside prospects preserved in Bleday and Hinds for later call-ups.
These cuts signal the end of a competitive spring. While Bleday and Hinds fans may lament the snub, the moves prioritize long-term roster health and immediate competitiveness. The Reds open the season with a clear plan: ride the starters, deploy Moll in key lefty situations, and lean on Lowe’s experience off the bench. Cincinnati’s 26-man squad is set—now it’s time to play ball.
