that’s gotta be changed sometime. get that it has to be a quick decision by the hitter, but that’s just silly
Fair, but that also means the umpires need to be quick about calling strikes. Sometimes they deke the hitter when they slightly delay the call.
seems like they put that in there on purpose to eliminate the bat toss to sell a walk lol
As much as I can’t stand guys pimping their walks before the call, this is a stupid “wrinkle.”
So willyer Abreu was able to throw his bat and gloves away and still challenge it or is this bc he twirled his bat?
He flipped before the call was made.
God, this is *so* stupid. Just implement ABS fully. And if it isn’t working for whatever reason, then just use umpires.
What is the deal with pro sports leagues deciding “hey we’re gonna add this new element that improves the game but also we’re gonna add some arbitrary and stupid rule that limits it for no real reason.” This is like when the NFL flagged you and wouldn’t review a play if you threw a challenge on an automatic review play
Seems like a dumb rule to me. Should just be a certain period of time after the call is made (3-5 seconds)
Ok now THATS stupid
The guy who could probably benefit the most with being able to challenge calls… and still can’t catch a break.
He didn’t say Simon says
What a stupida facking rule
I predicted Cavan would be one of the biggest beneficiaries of the ABS but didn’t see this wrinkle.
seems like a pointless requirement, but sure
This is so stupid and, as such, so fitting for baseball. He flipped his bat before the ump made his call.
It looks like he’s about to toss the bat for a walk, then hears strike and keeps the bat by flipping it to himself and challenges the call. Seems like he is just getting screwed over here
That’s so fucking stupid. There is literally zero benefit gained in that rule, it’s just an excuse for umps to deny a review when they don’t want to get their ego bruised. Might as well add a rule that all review requests must be prefaced with a request in “Mother, may I?” form, or else the player requesting the review will be suspended for 80 games.

“before any other movements.” Where does that line get drawn? Scratching an itch? One step towards the dugout? What about a step *away* from the dugout?
I think a time-based system makes more sense. You get 3 seconds (or 5 or something) to challenge a call. It’s a sport – it’s all about motion. You can’t tell an athlete they have to remain still. Unless you define *specific* movements that would forfeit the right to challenge. Bat flips among them, sure. Hops, skips, and jumps can be included.
That’s BS. The only reason the bat flip happened at all is because he was already throwing his bat away on ball four.
Oh that’s gonna cause issues with umps who take their sweet time to call ball or strike.
Stupid rule and it really seems like they’re intent on policing player expression through the rules. Just make the time limit x seconds after the umpire makes the call, who cares if he moved or whatever.
That’s an insane rule. If this is a rule umpires calls need to be instantaneous. He clearly started the bat flip assuming it was a ball, and touched his head in the next instant. Horrible judgement by the ump. But also a relatively unenforceable rule.
Just make it they have to challenge within the first three seconds of the new pitch clock.
Umpires are trash
Just let the robots call all the balls and strikes. These challenges are a waste of time.
