For the Cubs, the calculus was simple: They buy out four years of Crow-Armstrong in arbitration and get two free agent years. Those are prime, premium seasons for a player they’ve seen develop and believe can be even more than he is already.

  1. More from Jeff: The lack of a club option in Pete Crow-Armstrong’s deal with the Cubs is rare. This is by far the biggest guarantee for a player with five years of club control that doesn’t include an option. Cubs were still fine with it. They get a high-floor player with superstar ceiling.

  2. At worst, he is one the top defensive OF in the game. That probably wont fall off by age 31. If he can be a 100-110 WRC+ hitter, he is absolutely worth the money.

  3. Am I missing something? This makes a ton of sense for PCA. But the Cubs essentially gave him a massive raise from 2027-2031 even though he was already under team control just to get a deal on his 2032 season? This is basically a pay increase that grants them one additional year of team control, right?

Edit: PCA was signed through the conclusion of the 2030 season, so it’s two more years of team control.

  4. Stoked for this. Glad the team decided to buy out the arb years for an extra couple prime free agent seasons. Always like seeing good players get paid. Guy will be on NL MVP ballots for years to come. The only question is how many gold gloves he’ll rack up when it’s all said and done.

  5. Not gonna lie I was hoping this was going to be longer term than that. It’s also 19.2 AAV, which is a great deal for the Cubs.

    Caleb and Connor your next

  6. This is a good deal for Pete. He will get paid well and still hit free-agency in his prime. The deal benefits both sides. He will be the heart ♥️ beat of the Cubs for a while.

  7. That’s a good sign for these punks. Really good player and he is for sure a huge fan favorite in Chicago. When I went it’s damn near the only jersey I seen besides Shota and Happ.

  8. I mean by the time he’s 31 his speed and defensive abilities will have likely fallen off by then. I see this as an absolute steal by the cubs.

  9. “But if you don’t do a deal you could end up getting super-paid by the Dodgers!”

    “Fuck them Dodgers.”

  10. Nice to see PCA signing and staying with the Cubbies…can’t believe we traded him for Baez…half a year

  11. Not bad at all for either side. I’ll treat it as 7-years, $116M since it takes a year to kick in. Pete’s floor is pretty high, so comparing it to something like Roman Anthony’s 8-year, $130M contract, it seems in-line

  12. Nice deal for both here. Definitely some worry with how bad he was in the 2nd half but at $19 million aav that’s not terrible even if he ends up not hitting.

But if he’s the first half PCA then this is an absolute steal

  13. Pretty good deal for PCA. I’m not convinced he’s a superstar, but he’s a high floor player that can piece together a great career just on his defensive value. Probably this generation’s Kevin Kiermeier, which is a hell of a ballplayer.

  14. Man imagine he balled out all year. Would’ve guaranteed a big chunk more money

  15. I wouldn’t be looking to extend PCA if I was the cubs, there’s a huge likelihood the guy just can’t hit. Having said that, this deal isnt too bad for them, at least it ends when the guys defence should still be elite at 31. Also, congratulations to him. It’s insane that you can make this kind of money after 1 season now.

  16. Thats… cheap? cheaper than I thought? Maybe the dodgers just skewed my view of contracts lol

  17. PCA went from “League minimum ain’t so fucking bad” to now making millions. Looks like a guy where money isn’t everything. I’m happy for him.

  18. “Be me
    25 year old Cubs fan
Wake up, feeling good, check baseball subreddit
See that we blew a 4-run lead in the 9th
    Again.
    Remember 2016
Tell myself I’m not gonna let it ruin my day
Immediately go to Wrigelyville to drink Malört and cry
Ask the bartender if Sammy Sosa ever cleared his name
    Get kicked out
    “Well, there’s always next year!”
MFWRW (My Face When Running Wild) it is, in fact, never next year.
    Fuck the Cardinals.”

  19. I’m confused. I get why it’s valuable to get money now, but isn’t this still quite low in value? He’s still a premier CF at a time where the league is low in them, and he has true 5-tool capability. The season might be uneven but even if that’s the bar, that’s way above most. As someone that gets so much from their speed and athleticism, locked up at that amount until 31 isn’t the best for that second contract imo. These feels more on line with Braves or Athletics deals of team-friendly arb buyouts that help players in the short term. In general, kind of wary of making the huge commitment from the player perspective if things do happen to swing better in your favor in the new CBA. But then again, money now is good overall in these economic times so I guess that’s a problem for future PCA.

  20. Tonight I’ve learned that Pete has a lot of haters… Not sure what it is about Chicago and their athletes being the most hated on players in the league but… oh well. I love em.
