SEASON OVER: San Jose Sharks Big Game MELTDOWN—Will Smith & Macklin Celebrini Spotlight
San Jose Sharks’ playoff dreams fade after a crushing 6-3 loss, but bright spots emerge as Macklin Celebrini, Will Smith, and Igor Chernyshov flash the potential of San Jose’s future top line. Can these young talents spearhead a dramatic rebuild and reposition the Sharks as contenders by 2026? JD Young explores whether recent performances point to better days ahead for the franchise.
JD Young breaks down the underlying issues plaguing the Sharks—a thin blue line, inconsistent goaltending, and questions about Ryan Warsofsky’s long-term role as head coach. The episode covers Will Smith’s resurgence after his benching, Mukhamadoulin’s standout defensive performance, and the strategic implications of the Sharks’ draft position as the organization focuses on acquiring a high-caliber defenseman. With veterans potentially being phased out and promising prospects stepping up, JD asks: Will the Sharks capitalize on their high draft pick to accelerate the rebuild?

Y’all think trading for Sherwood was a big mistake now that we’re not making the playoffs and the 2nd round picks are more valuable than they were at the time of the trade?
You miss the fact that this is a Nashville team of mostly AHL players on the ice. This game had nothing to do with where the team could or should be at. This game loss is a coaching problem. Wars needs to go yesterday.
Eklund should not be ahead of Misa on the Powerplay. I just don’t see it with Eklund. He’s not getting better.
Do we cheer to lose for better draft pick?
Play the kids!
*plays the kids
Why do the kids play like kids?!
Looks like a top 5 pick is back on the menu boys 😈
JD, you said, “in the long run it’s probably better for this team if they end up with another high draft pick.” Thanks for finally admitting it!
Get all the barracuda kids up to get some experience. Time to tank. This team ain’t ready at all
As a realistic Sharks fan, my expectation was a fun team that still finished in that 5-10 pick area so this season is still progress. Next year is when we will be firmly in the post season race.
It’s probably better in the long run that we get a higher draft pick- especially because there are some decent defense prospects that could help us out. Regardless, we aren’t ready for playoff hockey. You could tell the whole team was nervous ( they even admitted it) and just made some awful mistakes. Hopefully, this is a good lesson for not only the team but Warso too. And hopefully Grier gets it together and figures out how to help us on the blue line during the offseason
This team wasn’t built to win. It was built to gain more assets and Celebrini with above average goalie play changed that.
26-27 MG needs to build a team to win. No more planing to trade off stuff.
Warso has to coach to win. Development is the focus of the AHL.
Lines need to gel
A bunch of players need to be replaced — blue line and bottom six wingers.
Chernyshov should've been on the top line since the game at Florida
It's now time to bring up Musty, Bystedt, and Cagnoni. Get them experience on the big squad heading into next season.
If they resign Klinberg, then bet them to miss playoffs again.
Listen, I’ll be happy if we get a high draft pick. But until I see an e or a x next to the logo, I’m pulling for them to win. From this point really would be quite the Cinderella story
Hard work beats talent when talent doesn't work hard
Youth, inexperience, coaching, the excuses are all there. This team greatly relies on Celebrini but has proven that they are capable, they simply came out flat and played with zero urgency. Recent teams they have played like the Islanders and Nashville are playing for their playoff lives and it shows. Sharks aren't there yet but expectations next year have grown significantly and that's awesome! This is a significant season and the organization should be excited. Exceeded expectations and the rebuild not only is going according to plan but has leaped forward.
I'd let this group finish out the season and just roll the lines. Focus should be on the Cuda now, because they are a wagon! Not sure if Cherney and Ostapchuk can go back down with waiver stuff but they should be playing with the Cuda now. They are a part of that team and their early season success and should play in the playoffs with that group.
Sharks need to draft a stud dman this draft. Feel like trading for a dman this postseason given the ufa class is weak isn’t the play with how pricy the deadline was.
it was over loss to Buffalo. out of energy. next year we get in. let’s win lottery. hope oilers suck at end maybe win lottery twice
Well. I'm glad people are finally seeing this team for what it is. Don't! Drink! The Coolaid!
Lots of excuses. They are valid. Let's not let the coaching, off the hook. Looked like this team was not prepared. Decisions, choices…. Someone made these. This team played as though, they had never played together. Very disappointed.
I mean for being so close to the playoffs all year… and the potential to get a top 5 pick… HECK yea I will take that! LGS!
What ever 2 d prospects we get and Sam should start in the ahl next season don’t rush the development. Defenseman at 19-20 aren’t ready yet
The thing the sharks are experiencing is teams desperate for a spot or position taking them seriously. It feels like buffalo and Nashville are in playoff mode. Nashville has so many vets that want to win and have been there before, and they are making the push. Buffalo is also really believing in themselves and throwing the body hard. Edmonton is also fighting for their life, given LA could potentially kick them out of a playoff spot. Technically, the sharks could still overtake them. So teams are playing harder. Especially more veteran teams. The pains of youth are coming through here. I hope it helps the players grow.
They still in this especially if we still play them twice
Booooo
We still technically control our destiny and will make the playoffs if we win out. However, im rooting for us to lose out so we have a chance at one of the top RHD. Our defensive future looks bleak otherwise. I really like Misa, but we badly needed Schaefer.
