If Watson wins the quarterback battle and plays well, the Browns could always bring him back for more.

In fact, when Berry first traded three first-round picks and more in 2022 for Watson, he said he hoped it would be a 10-year proposition and not just the original five.

So when it comes to Watson vs. Shedeur Sanders and whoever else is in the quarterback room this offseason, his expiring contract — worth $46 million a year — won’t be a factor.

“We’re probably just more focused on performance and best players,” Berry told a small group of Browns beat writers at the NFL owners meetings here. “Certainly time horizon factors into that, but just with any veteran player, there’s no rule against extending the player’s contract if they perform and they do well. So I wouldn’t necessarily box it into any one approach. It really will be performance-based.”

Berry also re-iterated that no one has a leg up in the competition at this point. All three quarterbacks currently on the roster — including 2025 third-round pick Dillon Gabriel — are on equal footing heading into the start of the offseason program on April 7.

  1. Really shows you the spine these people have, you can get accused of raping 21 people but all is a-okay if you play fine afterwards

So tired of this dude, just want him out of the league already

  2. If Deshaun can stand upright and jog at a reasonable pace he’s the best QB physically and mentally on the roster by a mile. Unless he’s somehow traded I’ll be shocked if either an undersized 6’1″ QB with a noodle arm and questionable football IQ, or a 5’9″ QB who is completely risk averse can beat Deshaun out in a fair competition.

It’s been ages since the shoulder injury so I assume he’s totally recovered, and even with the Achilles…who is threatening him in a footrace from this QB room?

  3. The day that Watson is off the team will be the happiest day of my Browns fandom.

  4. I just want to say what’s up to the Steelers fan that is inevitably going to screenshot this and put it up over on the AFC meme sub!

  5. Just pull up the Giants Game…

Watson can go fly a very high, very far away kite.

  6. I think Shadeur gets the opening day nod and Watson is the backup. Either due to a really bad performance streak, or injury, Watson will eventually start at least one game for us next year.

  7. Can’t y’all just let BROWNS Fans not be miserable about this asshole and the strife he’s caused… for like a minute?

Motherfucker played at a DTR level… DTR is available! We could bring in DTR to compete!

STOP giving this asshole airtime… he stinks!

  8. I’m on team winning. I didn’t like the trade. But I’ve already come to grips with the trade 3 years ago. If Watson is the guy so be it

  9. I am shocked to see so many of you believing what AB spews out of his mouth. He also said that Travis Hunter was Ohtani. EVERYTHING he is says to the public is a lie.

Edit: I think Watson is unlikely to play this season but I do recognize there is a small chance because this is the Browns. He was literally cheered off the field on injury.

  10. The only reason I fear this is that Jimmy must have HUGE ego tied up in this.

He went all in. He pissed off other owners by going fully paid. It has been an unmitigated embarassing disaster.

I can see him wanting that one more crack at saving face.

If he can steal even one good season from the Scumbag or two he can “save face” for the worst trade and contract in NFL history.

  11. Now nice for Berry to throw Dillon Gabriel a bone knowing they’d both happily accept dealing him to the first team to offer Berry a fifth round draft pick for him.
