The second day of WTA Madrid action begins and brings some matchups with a one-sided history. Can Taylor Townsend finally get a win over Katie Boutler, having lost all their previous three battles? Read on to find out our thoughts.
WTA Madrid Day 2 Predictions
Zeynep Sonmez vs Carlota Martinez Cirez
Head to Head: First Meeting
Somnez goes into this match as the heavy favorite. Nearly three hundred ranking places above, you could forgive her for already looking forward to a second round meeting with Cristina Bucsa. Her opponent hasn’t played a Tour-level match since Hamburg last year, which she lost and is fresh from a Round of 32 loss at an ITF W75 event in Portoroz to World #151 Sofia Costoulas. Needless to say, Somnez should be getting through this one.
Prediction: Somnez in 2
Talia Gibson vs Emiliano Arango
Head to Head: First Meeting
A genuinely intriguing match between two players who have proved reliable stays in the Top 100. Gibson, who is still young at 21, enjoyed an excellent Miami Open, where she beat Naomi Osaka and Iva Jovic in straight sets before falling to the imperious Elena Rybakina. Arango has been steadily fighting away on tour for some time now but has failed to show the potential that her young opponent has in recent times. Gibson is high on confidence and has shown that she could break into the top 20 in future years if she stays on this trajectory. Ultimately, she should find little difficulty in this matchup.
Prediction: Gibson in 2
Taylor Townsend v Katie Boulter
Head to Head: 0-3
The running joke at this time of year is that Boulter must already be looking forward to the grass court swing. It’s true, though. How often does she exit Roland Garros early and start the prep for the English grass court series? Every time is the answer; she has never won a match in Paris. On the other side of the net is the extremely talented Townsend, who has similarly struggled on clay (in the singles game). But something has to give and with two Rouen wins under her belt, the Brit will book a daunting meeting with Jessica Pegula.
Prediction: Boulter in 3
