One year on from seeing North American rivals the United States drape themselves in gold at the IIHF World Championships — and three months after falling to the Americans in the gold-medal round of the Winter Olympics — Team Canada finally got its revenge.
The Canadians swept Team USA aside, 4-0, to move on to the semifinals of the famous hockey tournament, moving one step closer to their first gold medal since 2023.
Team Canada opened the scoring early, putting itself out in front after Macklin Celebrini rattled the net with a wrist shot. Its advantage swelled in the second, with Dylan Holloway corralling a bumbling rebound before slipping an effort beyond Devin Cooley.
The Americans huffed and puffed in the third, inflicting punishment upon Jet Greaves’ cage. The Canadian netminder was undaunted, however, sending the venomous strikes away from his confines.
That was all Team Canada needed to punch its ticket to the semifinals, with a pair of empty-net goals — one of which came from Sidney Crosby’s stick — making the score that much more appealing.
The Canadians haven’t tasted gold in three years. But fueled by Celebrini and Crosby, they look well-equipped to do so this time around.

12:20 p.m.: Greaves continues to come up trumps in this one. The Blue Jackets net-minder denied the Americans once more, this time on the odd-man rush. Canada’s defense has looked wobbly in the opening moments of the final frame.
12:05 p.m.: Back to action for one more period! The Americans will need to author up quite the comeback to get back in this one.
End of second period: Canada 2, USA 0
11:50 a.m.: The second period ends with another Canada flourish. The Canadians have looked every bit like the behemoth they appeared to be ahead of the tournament, producing chances in bunches. The United States has huffed and puffed, attempting to blight the likes of Celebrini and Sidney Crosby.
The Americans have also produced a fair few opportunities of their own, taking advantage of some uncharacteristic Canadian penalties to rip some shots towards Greaves’ cage. Still, Canada’s two-goal advantage has held firm.
11:30 a.m.: GOAL! Dylan Holloway doubles Canada’s advantage! He danced into the zone, fired a shot off his defender than picked up the bumbling puck and ripped it into the roof. That’s just what the Canadians have deserved thus far.

10:43 a.m.: The United States fends off Canada’s advances! This matchup somehow remains tied through 14 minutes. Given the Canadians’ hulking lineup, that’s got to be considered a success for Team USA.
10:35 a.m.: Seven minutes into the frame, the Canadians are on the ascendancy. The Americans were dealt a cruel blow in the form of a five-minute major after Ryan Lindgren nailed Evan Bouchard with a hit to the head.
