COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KBTX) – The vast majority of Texas A&M’s newly constructed men’s basketball roster was in action Tuesday in a summer practice open to media.
However, two players expected to be key to A&M’s fall success remained limited as the Aggies gear up for McMillan’s second season at the helm of the program.
Forwards Mackenzie Mgbako and Zach Clemence were sidelined from contact drills Tuesday as they recover from injuries, with both expected to return to full action in July, McMillan said.
Mgbako only played seven games for the Aggies last season due to a fractured foot that he injured again before Southeastern Conference play. The McDonald’s All-American came to A&M last summer from Indiana, where he averaged 12.2 points and 4.6 rebounds in his sophomore season.
Clemence also injured his foot, which required surgery, McMillan said. The 6-foot-10 forward averaged 6.9 points and 3.2 rebounds for the Aggies last year.
McMillan said Tuesday he has yet to fully evaluate his team’s rotational depth due to limited practices and the absence of the pair of forwards.
“You look like you can find 10 good players that can play,” McMillan said. “Now, that’s to be determined. When you get on that floor, you’ve got to have everybody buying into playing hard and unselfish. We certainly have enough talent to play 10 guys.”
A&M is also waiting for news on an NCAA waiver for Bryson Warren, who came to A&M after spending five seasons in the NBA G League. He had no previous college experience before going pro. McMillan said he expects an answer on the waiver sometime in the next month.
It is uncertain whether the NCAA’s new five-for-five eligibility structure, approved Tuesday, will impact Warren’s waiver request.
The Aggies still have one open roster spot, which McMillan said the team may or may not fill. Former A&M guard Marcus Hill, who entered the transfer portal during the last window, also has an eligibility request pending for an extra year. The Aggies would be interested in bringing him back should he be granted more eligibility; however, they are not holding out much hope.
“We’ll wait on Marcus’ situation, but it’s minimally a half-court shot,” he said.
