BYU adds Serbian center Petar Ostojic to replace Urbaniak on the roster.The 7-foot-1 Ostojic is not expected to have eligibility issues with the NCAA.
BYU basketball lost and gained a center on the same day. The player lost is Jakub Urbaniak, who was ruled ineligible by the NCAA due to his professional status in Europe. Urbaniak not being eligible was on the table, and it is not overly surprising that he was not eligible for the NCAA. He signed a deal with CB Gran Canaria in Spain.
The player added will be a center replacement for Urbaniak in Serbian big man Petar Ostojic, as reported by Robby McCombs from Vanquish The Foe. He got the attention of a number of college teams from his performance at the FIBA U18 EuroBasket.
Eligibility shouldn’t be a concern because the level of play is not considered an issue by the NCAA.
This was not a surprise as Ostojic had been on BYU’s radar this summer.
Ostojic stands 7-foot-1, and could serve as a strong defensive presence in the paint at the college level once he gains experience. With Kohler and potentially Urbaniak in front of him, plus the ability for Young to play a five-out style without a traditional style, Ostojic could be given a year of development in the system while getting integrated into college basketball.
