The earliest image in this week’s selection dates back to 1909 and shows a young Prudhoe football team. More than 100 years later, it offers a fascinating glimpse into the early days of organised football in the region and the generations of players who helped lay the foundations for the local game.

Success on the pitch is a recurring theme throughout the decades. In April 1975, Blue Back celebrated a memorable season as skipper Bod Dover was lifted aloft with the Hexham and District Sunday League Championship Trophy and the President’s Cup.

That same year also saw South Tynedale’s footballers enjoy cup success.

Other photographs highlight the enduring strength of grassroots football across the district. Haydon Bridge teams from the 1980s, the treble-winning Wallington FC side of 1962-63 and Hadrian Paints FC of Haltwhistle all reflect the villages, workplaces and communities that helped sustain the sport across Northumberland.

The collection also includes a visit from one of football’s biggest personalities. Former Newcastle United‘s David Ginola is pictured at a Nike School of Football event in Hexham, inspiring youngsters dreaming of one day following in the footsteps of their heroes.

Together, these photographs tell the story of football in Tynedale across more than a century. Long before television deals and the global game we know today, local teams were creating sporting memories on pitches across the region.
