LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Stick-to-itiveness was the trait the Bellarmine University women’s soccer team personified in a dominant first half Thursday at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium.
All three goals Bellarmine scored before the break came off rebounds, and the Knights rode that relentlessness to a 3-0 win over Stetson in Atlantic Sun Conference action.
Bellarmine notched its first ASUN win in its conference home opener. Freshman midfielder Ella Flynn, junior midfielder Brynn Severance and freshman forward Brooklyn Donohue found the net for the Knights (3-5-2, 1-1-1), whose three goals were a season high.
Bellarmine’s first goal against Stetson (2-8, 1-2) not only set the tone, it was a sign of things to come. After having a header and a follow-up saved, Flynn ripped her third attempt into the left upper 90 for a 1-0 lead in the 14th minute on her second goal of the season.
Bellarmine bumped its advantage to 2-0 in the 22nd minute on Severance’s first goal of the year. After sophomore forward Katie Paulakonis drilled a shot off the crossbar, Severance, with her body parallel to the goal and with her leg swinging across her frame, made a pinpoint chip shot from the top of the box, lofting it over Stetson’s goalkeeper and into the net.
Bellarmine found the net again in the 35th minute off yet another rebound. Flynn rifled a low shot that Stetson’s goalkeeper couldn’t handle cleanly, and Donohue punched in the loose ball for a 3-0 lead on her second goal of the season.
Not to be overlooked after the offensive explosion, Bellarmine’s defense recorded its first shutout of the season. Sophomore goalkeeper Anna Jenkins collected three saves for the Knights.
Bellarmine finished with a 19-8 advantage in shots, including 10-3 on frame.
Bellarmine will host FGCU in an ASUN contest at 12:30 p.m. (ET) Sunday.
