DAYTON, Ohio – The IU Indianapolis men’s soccer team collected a hard fought, 2-2 draw at Wright State on Friday night (Oct. 30), getting goals from senior Jose Antonio Herrera and freshman Thomas Weinrich in the road result. The match was equal parts soccer match and wrestling match as the teams piled up 26 fouls, eight cards, multiple reviews and an assortment of scoldings from the officiating crew.
And at night’s end, each team walked away with a point in the standings.
“Tonight was a really competitive performance from the boys on the road against a strong Wright State side,” head coach Keegan Boom said. “We are slowly becoming the blue collar team that we talked about early in the conference season. There is still growing pains and we need to continue to improve, but there are a lot of positives to take from a performance like tonight. We look to turn the corner and end the season on a high against Detroit Mercy at home on Tuesday.”
The Jaguars were outshot 25-6 overall and 12-2 on goal, but were still in the mix for a road win as rookie goalkeeper Peter Field finished with 10 saves in net.
Herrera put the Jaguars on the board first in the 18th minute when Tyson Aschliman shifted a short pass to the team’s top scorer, leading to his finish from in close. The Jags took the 1-0 lead to the locker room before yielding the tying goal on a penalty kick in the 52nd minute.
In the 64th minute, an IU Indy giveaway in the defensive third led to Keiji Nakazawa angling a tough shot past Field for a go-ahead score. The Jaguars regained momentum in the 78th minute on a Weinrich blast from the right side off a long diagonal ball from Luke Gonda.
The Jags did more defending than attacking down the stretch and didn’t muster much against the WSU defense.
Santiago Sanchez and Weinrich had a team-high two shots apiece. Gabe Gotting paced WSU with five shot attempts, including the penalty kick conversion in the 52nd minute.
The Jaguars will round out the season on Tuesday (Nov. 3) when they host Detroit Mercy at Carroll Stadium at 2:00 p.m. on ESPN+.
