Jarren Duran Gets Bad News on Red Sox Trade Deadline Plans originally appeared on Athlon Sports.

The Boston Red Sox have two clear needs as they approach the MLB trade deadline: starting pitching and first base. With plenty of prospects worth trading and rumors surrounding one of their outfielders getting moved, the Red Sox have a lot of buzz on what they’ll do at the trade deadline.

Jim Bowden of The Athletic wrote a report on 20 things he was hearing in the build-up to the MLB trade deadline. For the Red Sox, his report was bad news for outfielder Jarren Duran, as it hinted at Boston looking to move one of their outfielders for help elsewhere.

“The Red Sox will try to deal one of their outfielders for starting pitching help and an upgrade at first base,” Bowden writes. This plan from the Red Sox likely implicated Duran as the most likely candidate to be traded.

Among the outfielders that could be on the move, Duran is the most likely. While Ceddane Rafaela and Wilyer Abreu would also likely fetch a decent market, the Red Sox would be able to bring home more by dealing Duran than if they dealt either of the other two.

Duran is 28 years old and is under team control through the 2028 season. While he has the team control that’s appealing, his age, 28, is a little older than Abreu’s (25) and Rafaela’s (24).

Roman Anthony getting the call-up also doesn’t help, as the Red Sox’s outfield got even younger and more crowded. The youth coming up from the Minor Leagues could mean the Red Sox are looking towards the future instead of 2025.

Of the outfielders available for the Red Sox to move, Duran has also been the most talked-about candidate. Dennis Lin of The Athletic reported that the San Diego Padres reached out about Duran’s availability.

A team trading for Duran would acquire an outfielder who put up 8.7 WAR in an All-Star season just one year ago. he led the Major Leagues in triples and doubles in 2024, an impressive feat in his fourth season in the big leagues, and just his second time starting more than 60 games.

Bowden’s report points to the Red Sox moving off one of their outfields for help at first base and in the starting rotation. While there are multiple options, Duran is the most likely.

With all the smoke surrounding a potential Duran trade, things are progressing towards the Red Sox shipping out their fan favorite outfielder to bolster the other areas of their roster.
