The New York Mets have one of the best records in baseball at 23-14, but their season has had plenty of road bumps. One of them is second baseman/outfielder Jeff McNeil’s struggles.

The 33-year-old spent the first few weeks of the campaign rehabbing an oblique injury, and was slashing just .229/.282/.429 with one homer and five RBI in 10 games before Wednesday’s matchup with the Arizona Diamondbacks. That’s a far cry from his 2022 season, when we won the batting title after slashing .326/.382/.454 with nine homers and 62 RBI in 148 contests.

Mets fans are freaking out about McNeil on social media after the team’s 5-1 loss to the Diamondbacks on Tuesday, as he went 0-for-3.

One fan was particularly upset about McNeil’s defense.

“I’m already sick of Jeff McNeil,” he said.

“The day Jeff McNeil returned is the day the losses started piling up,” another one said.

“Notice the Mets stopped playing elite baseball once Jeff McNeil came back. Get this guy OUT of here already,” another said.

“Jeff McNeil should never start again,” another said.

Ironically, McNeil hit a RBI triple to put New York up 3-0 in the seventh inning against the Diamondbacks.

After their game on Wednesday, the Mets will host the Chicago Cubs and Pittsburgh Pirates before hitting the road to face the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox. Then, they’ll host the Los Angeles Dodgers, Chicago White Sox, and Colorado Rockies before rematching the Dodgers and Rockies on the road.

New York was 4-6 over its last 10 games heading into Wednesday’s contest.
