Unlike the first two games against the Kansas City Royals, it took some grit and grind for the Yankees to squeak out a win at Kauffman Stadium on Thursday. A 1-0 victory over their ALDS opponent from last year gave them a season sweep of KC while also putting the Yanks up another half-game in the AL East standings.
With that, here are the other results around the AL from Thursday:
Detroit Tigers (45-25) 4, Baltimore Orioles (27-40) 1
After the Orioles defeated the Tigers handily on Wednesday, the AL Central leaders hopped right back into gear. With lefty ace Tarik Skubal on the mound, Detroit was able to contain the Baltimore offense throughout the game, allowing only one run.
The runs didn’t start until the fourth inning, when Dillon Dingler smoked a solo dinger (try saying that five times fast) to put the home squad up 1-0, and Parker Meadows hit his first long ball of the 2025 season, a three-run shot that put the Tigers up 4-0.
Four innings later, Baltimore’s Dylan Carlson hit a solo home run to cut the deficit to three runs; it was part of a 3-for-3 day for him. But that was where the O’s offense would be cut short.
Skubal threw seven innings with six strikeouts, allowing only three hits and no runs over his outing. The Tigers’ bullpen also only allowed one hit over the two innings that they were entrusted to pitch, proving once again why the team as a whole is having so much success — even if the Orioles have not been the hardest opponent to face in MLB this season to this point. Detroit still has the best record in the American League.
Houston Astros (38-30) 4, Chicago White Sox (23-46) 3
The Astros and White Sox seemingly offered a mismatch, but that didn’t stop Chicago from putting up a fight until the very end in Houston. They nearly won the season series over Houston but had to settle with a split.
Framber Valdez took the mound for the Astros and immediately got into trouble by loading the bases. However, a strikeout of Tim Elko got him out of trouble and would contribute to his overall total of 12 K’s on the day through his five innings of work.
In the top of the third, the White Sox took the lead on a single from Edgar Quero, which scored Miguel Vargas from third base. However, that was not the last action of the third inning. In the home half, the Astros struck right back with some runs of their own. Jose Altuve doubled, scoring both Jeremy Peña and Isaac Paredes to put Houston up 2-1. And to add some more insurance, Altuve ended up coming around to score after another double in the inning by Yainer Diaz.
In the top of the fifth, Vargas tripled and scored for the second time, cutting the deficit to 3-2, but the Astros once again found a way to respond. Paredes stepped up to the plate and mashed a solo home run over the left center field wall to regain the two-run lead.
Things would stay quiet until the top of the ninth, when former Yankee Mike Tauchman hit a solo home run to cut the Astros’ lead to just one. However, Houston held strong and managed to earn the victory.
Other Games
Texas Rangers (33-36) 16, Minnesota Twins (36-32) 3: The Rangers’ offense has seen its share of struggles in 2025, but for the second time in this series against the Twins, they scored 16 runs. Bailey Ober got blitzed for seven runs in 4.2 innings, and most of the bullpen got slammed, too. Five different Rangers went deep, as Josh Smith’s leadoff homer set the tone for the carnage. Both Jake Burger and Josh Jung delivered three hits apiece.
