The Boston Red Sox entered 2025 with big expectations after signing high-profile names such as Garrett Crochet, Alex Bregman, and Walker Buehler in hopes of pushing the team back into contention. However, almost halfway through the season, the team’s performance has been a resounding failure.

Sitting at 34–36 and nine games back in the AL East, Boston hasn’t found consistency, especially within its starting rotation. Outside of Crochet, the rest of the staff has underwhelmed. Injuries derailed Kutter Crawford and Tanner Houck’s seasons, while Buehler has battled inconsistencies.
With the July 31 trade deadline approaching, the Red Sox are expected to be in the market for starting pitching—but it might not be the name fans expect.
ClutchPoints’ Owen Crisafulli suggests Boston should look to the Miami Marlins for help, but not for 2022 Cy Young winner Sandy Alcantara. While Alcantara is often cited as a top trade target, his 7.14 ERA through 13 starts raises red flags. As Crisafulli noted, “That is precisely what this team does not need.” Instead, he believes the Red Sox should target young right-hander Edward Cabrera.

Cabrera, 26, owns a 3.99 ERA with 66 strikeouts across 59.1 innings this season. While he is not an ace, he brings a solid repertoire to the table and would cost far less than Alcantara to acquire. If Boston wants to toe the line of buyer and seller at the deadline, Cabrera fits the bill.

While Boston’s AL East hopes appear slim, they remain within striking distance of a Wild Card spot. For a team still trying to define its identity, bolstering the rotation could be the difference between fading in August and pushing into October.
