from Royals hero to Monarchs mentor
KKansas City Royals

from Royals hero to Monarchs mentor

  • June 14, 2025

Kansas City, Kan. (WIBW) – Christian Colón knows what it feels like to be on top of the baseball world.

A first-round draft pick and clutch postseason performer, Colón played a pivotal role in the Kansas City Royals’ 2015 World Series title. His extra-inning single in Game 5 helped secure the crown, etching his name into franchise lore.

Now, nearly 10 years later, Colón is back in Kansas City — not as a player, but as the Kansas City Monarchs’ hitting coach. And though the setting may be different, the impact he’s having is unmistakable.

“I’ve been a part of the highs of the highs which is getting drafted in the first round, fourth pick overall and winning a World Series to also getting released, DFA’d and the lows of the lows,” Colon told 13 Sports. “I wanted to share all of my knowledge.”

Colón’s coaching philosophy is less about strict instruction and more about empowering players. He sees himself as a guide, not a commander.

“Look, let’s do it your way, let’s do it your way,” Colon explained. “If I have anything that I see I’d like to run it by you and see if you like it. But they’re in control. I’m just a facilitator.”

That mindset has earned him respect in the clubhouse — and results on the field. Monarchs players say Colón brings not just technical guidance, but belief and clarity in a game where confidence is often the difference-maker.

“I think his resume of him being a big leaguer and first rounder and making an impact at the big league level like, he’s able to feed down that information to us and what we need to do, so that we can get back to where he was,” Monarch’s infielder Josh Bissonette said.

Beyond timing drills and footwork tweaks, Colón is focused on something bigger: helping players believe they belong.

He’s not just another coach barking instructions in a batting cage. He’s a mentor with big-league experience, who remembers what it’s like to be chasing the dream — and what it takes to make it real.

“Over the years now, it becomes something that I really truly enjoy,” Colon said with a smile. “Just seeing them do their thing, and having success on the field.”

Under Colón’s leadership, the Monarchs are off to a blazing league-best 21-9 record.
