Listen as Jacob Misiorowski comments on his big-league debut in Milwaukee

Jacob Misiorowski comments on his big-league debut at American Family Field on June 12, 2025, against the St. Louis Cardinals. Misiorowski pitched five innings without allowing a hit during a 6-0 Brewers win.

Pat Murphy had the hook ready.

Freddy Peralta talked him out of using it.

And then the right-hander proved to his manager he was indeed up to the task of finishing out the sixth inning, retiring the dangerous Nolan Arenado with the go-ahead runner at third base.

The offense then did its part in the bottom of the frame, and by the end it all added up to a 3-2 Milwaukee Brewers victory over the St. Louis Cardinals at American Family Field on Friday night, June 13.

Peralta was one out away from finishing the sixth in drama-free fashion before grazing Willson Contreras in the arm with a pitch.

Alec Burleson then singled him to third, setting up a crucial at-bat against Arenado, who beat the Brewers in St. Louis in the teams’ first series in late April with a walk-off home run.

Peralta was at 92 pitches. Right-hander Grant Anderson was hot and ready to go.

“I’m pretty sure everyone saw Grant out the (bullpen) door,” said closer Trevor Megill, who’d eventually finish the Cardinals off for his 14th save. “Pretty sure he was on the field.”

Murphy, meanwhile, made the trek to the mound where he and Peralta had a chat.

“The players are the ones who win and lose the game,” Murphy said. “I believed Freddy when he said, ‘I’ve got some more. I’ve got this.’ And Arenado has been really good against Freddy – look at the numbers.

“I think everyone in the ballpark thought we were taking him out. I trust the guy. I’ve been around Freddy for how many years? I trust him. I knew that it was a moment for him that he could get through and that maybe would change some other moments in the future.

“So, I thought it was worth the gamble.”

Peralta made it pay off as he mustered up a 98.2-mph fastball that ran in on Arenado enough that he popped it up into foul territory down the first-base line. The ball tailed to the corner of Milwaukee’s dugout, where first baseman Rhys Hoskins leaned over and snagged it for a fitting end to Peralta’s night.

“It was a great feeling as soon as he turned back on his way to the dugout,” Peralta said. “Even if the result was going to negative and something happened, I felt good that he left me out there. It means a lot for me.

“I know it’s my last chance, and it’s something I asked for. That’s a lot of responsibility there. It’s no pressure, but I know that I have to do what I have to do.”

Of the four hits allowed by Peralta (6-4), it was consecutive doubles by Burleson and Arenado that tied the game at 1-1 only an inning prior.

He didn’t allow a baserunner over the first 3 â…” innings, and walked only one while striking out six.

Peralta has recorded three consecutive quality starts, and remains unbeaten in his seven turns at home this season.

“Freddy’s been doing this all year, he really has,” said Murphy of his ace, who lowered his ERA to 2.60. “He’s been special all year. Those first nine hitters, he got through them with 30-some pitches. Was predominantly fastball, but he was very efficient with his other stuff.

“Set the tone.”

Jackson Chourio with some daring baserunning

After three hitless innings between the two teams, leadoff man Sal Frelick lined an 89.5-mph shot off the inside of St. Louis starter Erick Fedde’s left wrist to start the Milwaukee fourth.

That left Frelick with a the Brewers’ first knock and Fedde in some pain. But Fedde remained in, and two batters later William Contreras sent a double into the left-field corner that scored Frelick from first and gave Milwaukee the lead.

In the sixth, Frelick followed the Arenado popout with another single and then stole second.

Jackson Chourio, up next, singled up the middle. Frelick misread the ball and as a result had to stop at third, but Chourio never stopped running and ended up at second base.

The Cardinals challenged the call only to see it upheld, and a Contreras sacrifice fly drove in Frelick and moved Chourio to third.

BOX SCORE: Brewers 3, Cardinals 2

Christian Yelich then chopped one right to Nolan Gorman at second, and Chourio, running hard all the way, slid into home just ahead of the tag to make it a 3-1 game.

“Chourio’s baserunning – very, very close,” Murphy said. “We have to be that team that plays like that. Have to. So, we’re going to run the bases and we’re going to get thrown out.

“We want to put pressure on them when it’s possible. Caution isn’t something that we’re going to worry about. Try to be smart, but we want to push the envelope.”

Jared Koenig pitched a scoreless seventh, Abner Uribe followed suit in the eighth and Megill allowed a run on a Victor Scott II single with two outs in the ninth before striking out Lars Nootbaar to end it.

Sal Frelick is stirring the drink

With two more hits on Friday, Frelick now has five to go along with three runs scored in two games in the leadoff spot against the Cardinals.

Frelick had led off only three times previously this season prior to the start of the series, and his gritty style of play is just what you’d typically want out of someone hitting at the top of the order.

Murphy has employed five different leadoff men in all, with Brice Turang’s 42 starts there and Chourio’s 22 leading the way.

“It’s not always going to be like that,” he said, referring to Frelick’s production the past couple games. “Sal or Brice, either one is giving us tough at-bats. Brice has (led off) most of the time, and we’re going to let Sal do it for a while.”
