The week for softball was supposed to start with Central Clarion’s visit to Brookville to take on the Lady Raiders at Blake Field at Northside Park. However, that game was postponed to Thursday due to wet field conditions.
For the 7-7 Lady Raiders, it’s off to Bradford Friday after the Wildcats makeup for a doubleheader before another matchup with Central Clarion on Saturday at Heindl Field in DuBois starting at 2 p.m.
Monday, the Lady Raiders host A-C Valley/Union for their Senior Day to finish the regular-season schedule.
Central Clarion was 5-5 going into the week. It was supposed to host St. Marys Wednesday but that game was postponed and after the Wildcats play Brookville twice in three days, the regular-season schedule appears to conclude at Keystone on Monday.
Both teams are Class 2A programs, so if they enter the postseason it’ll be part of what could be a sizable bracket. Most likely, Cranberry would own the top seed with Brockway, Redbank Valley and Moniteau making up the rest of the top four in some order with Brookville and Central Clarion possibly vying for the five and six spots. A-C Valley/Union could be a sixth team to enter the playoffs.
The Lady Raiders haven’t played since last Friday’s impressive 9-7 win over District 6 power West Branch while the Wildcats have been off since a 15-4 win over Johnsonburg on April 24.
In the win over West Branch, which went into the game with a 12-2 record, the Lady Raiders managed just three hits, but worked two Lady Warriors pitchers for 12 walks, including 11 off West Branch senior ace Makena Moore who had struck out 151 batters in 72 innings going into the game.
But the Moore walked 11 batters in 2 2/3 innings and the Lady Raiders, despite having no hits, led 7-0 after three innings.
West Branch tied it up with six runs in the top of the sixth before the Lady Raiders re-took the lead for good in the bottom of the inning.
Makaya McLaughlin led off with a single, the team’s third and final hit of the game, and two West Branch errors helped lead to the two runs. McLaughlin stole second and moved to third on a throwing error, and scored on a wild pitch.
Julie Greeley reached on an infield error. Courtesy runner Lily Adamson moved to second on a wild pitch and scored when Gabby West’s fly ball was misplayed.
Then in the top of the seventh, Lady Raiders pitcher Alyssa Tollini retired the side in order. She allowed eight hits and walked four while striking out five. Six of West Branch’s seven runs were unearned thanks to five Brookville errors.
Last Wednesday at Forest Area in Marienville, the Lady Raiders notched a 16-2 win in five innings. They put up 10 runs in the first inning and scored in all but one of their five at-bats.
The first nine Lady Raiders reached base to start the inning with five hits, two hit batters, one walk and one error. They wound up drawing eight walks and finishing with 11 hits.
Cadence Suhan went 3-for-4 with a double while Greeley singled and doubled.
Suhan got the win in the pitching circle, giving up three hits and walking six and striking out three.
