PALMYRA, Va. (WCYB) — In what was a strong three-year climb to return back to the VHSL Class 3 state title game, Abingdon baseball came up just a few runs shy of reaching the mountaintop.

The Falcons took an early 2-0 lead after working several walks in the first inning, but from there lost control of the lead in a 9-5 loss to Spotswood Saturday afternoon.

It’s tough when you get this close and have a lead but aren’t able to hold on,” said head coach Mark Francisco. “But they had a good season. Just came up one game short of their goal, but a heck of a year and I have 20 winners in that dugout.

The loss being a tough pill to swallow for a team that will watch six seniors walk away after 2025 – but have helped continue to build a special program.

It’s been a dream season up until today, but it’s more than winning and losing. These kids, I can’t brag enough about them,” added Francisco. “The goal of coaching I think is to try and create better people. I think this group of 20 are better people for being a part of this program.
