Which NCAA baseball teams could blow up the bracket

The Montgomery Advertiser’s Adam Cole and The Southwest Times Record’s Jackson Fuller break down who could wreck the tournament bracket.

LSU ace Kade Anderson on June 14 showed why he is a highly touted MLB draft prospect and a potential No. 1 pick.

The left-hander fired seven innings of dominant pitching against Arkansas in a 4-1 win for the Tigers to open the 2025 College World Series at Charles Schwab Field Omaha in Omaha, Nebraska. Anderson racked up seven strikeouts and his lone mistake was a solo home run by Reese Robinett in the sixth inning.

LSU took control of the game in the top of the second inning when it scored three runs and knocked Arkansas ace Zach Root out of the game. The Tigers scored three runs in the inning despite getting just one hit by forcing Root to walk two hitters and hit another.

The Razorbacks will fight to keep their season alive against Murray State in an elimination game on June 16, while LSU will look to continue in the winners’ bracket with a matchup against UCLA.

Here are the highlights from LSU’s win over Arkansas in the opening round of the College World Series:

LSU opens the 2025 CWS with a 4-1 win over SEC rival Arkansas. Kade Anderson delivered a seven-inning performance with seven strikeouts and limited the Razorbacks to just one run.

The Tigers will advance in the winner’s bracket and play UCLA on June 14, while Arkansas will be back to play in the loser’s bracket against Murray State, needing a win to extend its season.

Casan Evans enters the bottom of the ninth on the mound to close out the game. Evans has six saves this season.

Christian Foutch strikes out Jared Jones with a pair of runners on and two outs to end the top of the ninth inning.

Arkansas will come to the plate needing three runs to extend the game and four to win it.

Dave Van Horn makes another pitching change in the ninth inning as right-hander Christian Foutch is in to replace left-hander Cole Gilber. Gilber struck out three of the five batters he faced, also allowing a walk and a single.

Chase Shores records a pair of strikeouts on 100 mph pitches and then gets a lineout to escape the eighth inning in relief of Kade Anderson.

Cam Kozeal hits Kade Anderson’s 100th pitch of the game for a single. And that’s it for Anderson, as LSU coach Jay Johnson brings in reliever Chase Shores to relieve Anderson.

Despite being at 98 pitches, Kade Anderson is out on the mound for LSU to begin the bottom of the eighth inning.

Derek Curiel with an RBI single to left field to extend the LSU lead to 4-1 in the eighth inning. There was a questionable decision by third baseman Brent Iredale to cut off a throw from left fielder Charles Davalan, which had a chance to get Steven Milam scoring on the play.

With two outs and a runner on second base, Dave Van Horn comes out to remove Gabe Gaeckle. Lefty reliever Cole Gibler will come in to face left-handed hitter Derek Curiel.

Gaeckle recorded 10 strikeouts on 90 pitches in six innings in relief of starter Zach Root.

Kade Anderson strikes out Kuhio Aloy for the second time tonight for his seventh strikeout. Anderson is at 98 pitches through seven innings, so he could be done for the evening.

Gabe Gaeckle strikes out the side in the seventh inning to keep the score at 3-1 entering the bottom of the inning. Gaeckle struck out two hitters looking on an 0-2 count and a third swinging on a full count.

He has nine strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings.

Arkansas is on the board in the bottom of the sixth inning following a leadoff home run from first baseman Reese Robinett. It’s Robinett’s third home run of the season and his fifth career home run in three years.

Gabe Gaeckle records a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the sixth inning for Arkansas. The Razorback reliever has helped Dave Van Horn maintain order after a short start from Zach Root. Gaeckle has thrown 4 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing two hits, while striking out six and walking one.

Kade Anderson is seemingly getting better as the game wears on. He strikes out a pair in the bottom of the fifth inning to bring his total to four tonight. He has also recorded four flyouts and five groundouts while allowing just one hit and two walks.

Anderson is at 62 pitches through five innings, meaning he could potentially go the distance if he keeps this up.

LSU turns a 5-4-3 double play for the second time tonight, started by third baseman Michael Braswell III. Wehiwa Aloy records the first Arkansas hit of the game to lead off the inning, but is erased on the double play.

Wehiwa Aloy is 1-for-1 with a single and a walk, while Kuhio Aloy also has a walk. They represent all three base runners Kade Anderson has allowed through four innings.

Gabe Gaeckle records a 1-2-3 fourth inning with a pair of strikeouts in the top of the fourth inning. Gaeckle has four strikeouts in 2 1/3 innings of relief so far today.

Kade Anderson sets down Arkansas 1-2-3 in the bottom of the third inning. Anderson has set down five hitters in a row and has thrown 38 pitches through three innings.

Gabe Gaeckle strikes out the first two hitters of the third inning, but Luis Hernandez picks up a two-out single and then freshman Derek Curiel works a full count walk. However, Daniel Dickinson grounds into a fielder’s choice for Gaeckle to work out of the inning.

Dave Van Horn’s move pays off as Gabe Gaeckle gets Ethan Frey to ground out to end the second inning with runners on first and third with two outs. Van Horn opted for his ace reliever to face the right-handed hitter Frey.

After recording just five outs, Zach Root’s night is over as Dave Van Horn opts to bring in righty reliever Gabe Gaeckle. Root has allowed three runs in the inning despite allowing just one ball to leave the infield. He walked two hitters, hit a batter and allowed an RBI single to left field.

Josh Pearson scores on a fielder’s choice as he beats out a potential double play to plate another run. LSU leads 3-0 in the top of the second inning.

Michael Braswell is hit by a pitch on an attempted safety squeeze bunt attempt. That scores another run to make it 2-0 LSU and the top of the order is coming up for the Tigers.

Chris Stanfield drives in Luis Hernandez on an RBI single to left field to give LSU an early 1-0 lead. The bases are still loaded with one out.

With one out, Zach Root works himself into trouble following back-to-back outs with one out and then a bunt single. Chris Stanfield is up with the bases loaded and one out.

Kade Anderson walks Wehiwa Aloy with one out, but no damage done as he gets two flyouts and a groundout to get out of the first inning without allowing a run.

LSU ace Kade Anderson will face a talented Arkansas lineup, which includes the “Bash Braddahs”: Wehiwa and Kuhio Aloy.

Zach Root with an easy 1-2-3 inning in the first inning vs. LSU, including a swinging strikeout of Jared Jones on a changeup to end the top half of the inning.
