Las Vegas (KSNV) — A UNLV baseball player has officially been drafted in this year’s Major League Baseball Draft.

Pitcher Austin Cates was drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays in the seventh round, 217 overall in the 2024 MLB Draft.

Cates, who is a junior at UNLV, is also a Henderson native, who transferred from the College of Southern Nevada prior to the 2024 season.

According to UNLV, this is the second consecutive year that a Hustlin’ Rebel has been drafted, with the 2023 event seeing two student-athletes drafted.

Pitcher and Las Vegas native Jack Seelinger was drafted by theMiami Marlins in the 14th round,413 overall.

Catcher Jacob Sharp was also drafted in 2023 by theSeattle Mariners in the 17th round,517 overall.

A total of six baseball players with the Moutain West were drafted in this year’s draft including two players from UNR.

Cates’ selection also marks the third time in the last 10 MLB Drafts that a UNLV baseball player has been selected in a single-digit round afterPhillies shortstop Bryson Stott was selected in the first round and Royals right fielder Kyle Isbel in the third round.
