For having gotten swept in the desert to fall under .500 for the first time since mid-April on Wednesday, the Mariners have responded with basically the best two games they could to revive some enthusiasm for the team. I don’t think it’s too much to ask for them to pull off a sweep of their own.

Before we get to the lineups, I have a couple charts. The first is one I mentioned on yesterday’s Meet at the Mitt, showing that Williamson has adjusted to his chase problem (for now) and is being rewarded with better results (for now).

The second one is just a reminder for the haters.

Lineups

No rooks allowed today, I guess. Ben Williamson and Cole Young both have the day off with Jorge Polanco at the keystone and Master Bunny at the hot corner.

Emerson Hancock gets the ball for the Mariners, hoping to continue his run of competence since returning from Tacoma. Luis L Ortiz pitches for Cleveland. Despite throwing a lot of fastballs, Ortiz has some trouble with command, which could be a nice fit for this Mariners lineup. Or at least it would be if MLB’s preeminent strike-stealer weren’t catching for the Guardians today. Swing if it’s close, boys.

News:

Manager Dan Wilson confirmed today that Logan Gilbert will start tomorrow’s game in the series opener against Boston. Hopefully Zach Pop gets into today’s game.

Today in Mariners History

1991: The Mariners score seven runs on events that don’t involve a ball in play—four bases-loaded walks, a bases-loaded HBP, a wild pitch, and a passed ball—in a 15-2 win over Detroit

2024: In a 7-5 win, some of the more sluggish Mariners—Cal Raleigh, Tyler Locklear, and Dominic Canzone—as well as Dylan Moore steal four bases off poor Rangers backup catcher Andrew Kinzner, who can’t even blame his hurlers since the thefts came off three different pitchers
