The Gordon baseball team was honored with four players receiving All-UIL State Tournament recognition following the Longhorns’ first UIL Baseball State Championship game appearance in school history.
The Longhorns swept Hamlin in their first ever trip to the UIL state semifinals before falling to Fayetteville 4-2 in the Class 1A UIL Baseball State Championship game at Dell Diamond in Round Rock.
All-UIL State Tournament selections were determined by individual performances and overall team success in both the state semifinals and state championship games. UIL State Tournament MVPs are voted on by media members covering the state championship game.
Gordon junior catcher Brayden Walters, sophomore second baseman Hudson Campbell, senior shortstop Maddox Stewart and junior outfielder Stryker Reed each earned Class 1A All-UIL State Tournament honors for their individual performances during the final two rounds of the Texas high school baseball playoffs.
Walters went 2-for-9 at the plate with a double, three stolen bases, two walks and a run scored in the Longhorns’ three games in the UIL state semifinals and state championship. Campbell finished the UIL State Tournament with a 2-for-10 performance at the plate with two RBIs, a run scored and a walk.
Stewart, Gordon’s leadoff hitter, also earned a win on the mound in Game 2 of the Class 1A UIL state semifinals against Hamlin, tallying six strikeouts with five walks, six hits and five earned runs allowed in 6 ⅔ innings pitched.
Stewart also went 6-for-11 at the plate with five runs scored, two stolen bases, two walks and an RBI in the Longhorns’ three games against Hamlin and Fayetteville.
Reed raked for Gordon in the state semifinals and 1A state title game, going 4-for-12 at the plate with five RBIs, three stolen bases, two runs scored and a walk.
He also earned a save on the mound in Game 1 of the state semifinals against Hamlin, tallying one strikeout with two walks and one unearned run allowed in one inning pitched.
