When it comes to MLB All-Star voting, it typically turns into a popularity contest. Every team gets at least one representative, and the fans vote to decide who gets to actually start the game. For pitchers, things get tricky because they’re all selected by the managers. Things get even trickier for relief pitchers because if you have a potential rotation that includes names like Paul Skenes, Zack Wheeler and Robbie Ray… they’ll each likely see an inning of work, leaving little for actual relief arms. However, that didn’t deter a good chunk of Purple Row voters from thinking Jake Bird might be the Rockies’ representative.

Bird has struggled in his last two outings, but still boasts a team-leading 2.23 ERA in 40 1⁄3 innings.

The majority of folks, though, believe the nod will go to starting catcher Hunter Goodman, who leads the team both with a .284/.326/.494 triple slash as well as with 11 home runs. Additionally, he is among team leaders in doubles (16, 1st), triples (3, T-2nd), and RBI (40, 1st). He is having a breakout year, and should get serious consideration for the backup catcher role in Atlanta. It worked out well for the Rockies last time they sent a backstop to the Midsummer Classic!
