The 2025 MLB Draft takes place over two days (July 13-14) during All-Star Week. It consists of 20 rounds total over the two days with the first three rounds, compensatory picks and competitive balance picks occurring on the first night.

It will be broadcast live on ESPN and MLB Network for the first 43 selections at 3 pm PT. The remaining 62 picks of the first day will be on MLB Network and simulcast on MLB.com. The 4th through the 20th rounds will be on MLB.com starting at 8:30 am on the 14th.

The San Diego Padres will pick 25th on the first night of the draft but will not have a second round pick, as that was the penalty for signing Nick Pivetta during the offseason after he received a qualifying offer from the Red Sox. Their third round pick comes at #99 and that will be it for the first day of the draft.

On the second day they will pick 130th in the fourth round and 160th in the fifth round. After the start of the 6th round they will pick ninth through the remainder of the 20 rounds.

There are multiple mock drafts available to view on many sites online and the Draft Combine takes place at Chase Field in Arizona on June 17- 21 with 174 of the top 200 MLB’s best prospects taking part. There will be 89 of the top 100, 41 of the top 50, 14 of the top 20 and 6 of the top 10. The combine has on-field, medical and performance assessments as well as educational programs. There will be coverage of the combine on MLB Network on June 17 at 9am PT. Here is the list of attendees for the combine.

The College World Series is underway in Omaha, Nebraska with eight teams vying for the championship. Many of the top draft prospects are participating and here is an overview of the teams and players.

The latest mock draft from MLB.com’s Jim Callis has the Padres picking third baseman Xavier Neyens from Mount Vernon High School in Washington. There is also a high school shortstop that they are reportedly very interested in (Steele Hall, Hewitt-Trussville HS in Alabama) but the Padres are thought to be hamstrung by their low bonus pool amount (6.6 million) that is third-lowest among MLB teams.

The bonus pool is assigned by MLB to each team and is the amount allotted to them to sign their draft picks for the first ten rounds. Teams are allowed to go over their allotment but must pay a tax for doing so. Their round one allotment is $3.6 million but if they save money on picks in subsequent rounds, they can apply the savings to other players.

Keith Law of The Athletic posted his second mock draft on June 12 and has Steele Hall as the Padres pick in the first round. ESPN has not updated their first mock draft yet but have the Padres selecting Kruz Schoolcraft, a LHP out of Sunset High School in Oregon. There does seem to be a consensus that the Padres are most interested in high school players in the first round.

There are only 27 picks in the first round this year as the Dodgers, Yankees and Mets all lost their first round picks for exceeding the competitive balance cap.

Here is MLB.com’s central draft site that they update frequently and provides lots of information on the upcoming festivities.

I will update the progress of the mock drafts as we get closer to draft day and list the most likely targets for the Padres.
