NEW YORK – The Los Angeles Angels outlasted the New York Yankees 1-0 after an 11 inning pitchers’ duel Monday, June 16 at Yankee Stadium, with the Angels’ Christian Moore netting his first career hit, a triple in the eighth inning, before scoring the go-head run for the Halos in extra innings courtesy of a Nolan Schanuel RBI double

José Soriano got the start for the Halos and delivered seven innings of shutout ball, allowing six hits and just one walk while striking out six. The bullpen picked up where Soriano left off, with the five Halos in relief allowing just two hits between them in four innings of work and shutting out a Yankee offense that ranks top three in both RBIs and runs-scored in 2025.

Clarke Schmidt took the mound for New York and matched Soriano, the two hurlers trading scoreless innings. The game stayed shut out on both sides through all nine regulation innings, forcing the game into extras.

Between the scoreless innings, Angels’ second baseman and recent call-up Christian Moore made his own personal history in the eighth, ripping a cutter to right field that skipped past a diving Aaron Judge and rolled all the way to the wall while Moore made his way to third base for a triple, his first career Major League hit.

The Angels threatened in the ninth with singles by Jorge Soler and Mike Trout, who continued his hot streak since returning from the IL with two hits in the game, giving the Angels a chance to break the game open with two runners on base, though a Logan O’Hoppe ground out ended the inning and kept them from capitalizing.

The Angels wouldn’t threaten again until the 11th inning when Schanuel slapped a ball down the left field line for a double, scoring Moore, the designated runner, from second for the first run of the game for either team, giving the Angels a 1-0 lead.

The Halos had a chance to tack on even more insurance later in the inning with back-to-back walks by Trout and Taylor Ward to load the bases, though the next two batters went down in order and Los Angeles had to settle with their one-run advantage.

That one run would be all they needed for the win, though the Yankees made them work for it in the bottom of the 11th.

Brock Burke looked to close out the game for the Angels, but soon found himself staring down a bases-loaded situation after an intentional walk to Judge while Jasson Dominguez reached on a fielder’s choice and Jazz Chisholm Jr. singled his way aboard.

With their scant lead in jeopardy and the Yankees ready to walk it off, Burke’s night came to an end and Hunter Strickland came on in relief for the Angels.

Strickland wasted no time. His first pitch to Yankee shortstop Anthony Volpe was chopped down the line straight to Luis Rengifo at third base, who stepped on his bag for the force out and sealed the tight victory for the Halos to open the four-game-series.

The Angels look to keep the ball rolling in game two of the series against the Yankees Tuesday, June 17 at 4:05 PDT at Yankee Stadium.
