4 MLB prospects to watch during the 2025 Men’s College World Series

4 MLB prospects The Montgomery Advertiser’s Adam Cole and The Southwest Times Record’s Jackson Fuller are watching during the 2025 Men’s College World Series

By the end of the day, either LSU or UCLA baseball will have taken a significant step forward in their quest for a national championship.

After notching wins in their first games of the 2025 College World Series two days earlier, the Tigers and Bruins will square off on June 16 at Charles Schwab Field Omaha, with the winner of the matchup being well-positioned to make the CWS championship series.

In a game pitting the event’s two highest-ranked teams against one another, No. 6 LSU had its way with No. 3 Arkansas in a 4-1 victory on June 14. The Tigers were carried by a three-run second inning and a stellar outing from starting pitcher Kade Anderson, who struck out seven batters while giving up only three hits and one earned run across seven innings.

No. 15 UCLA, meanwhile, raced out to a 6-0 lead and held off a late charge from CWS Cinderella Murray State for a 6-4 victory on June 14. AJ Salgado and Roman Martin each drove in two runs in the win for the Bruins, who remained undefeated in NCAA tournament play this season.

It will be the sixth all-time meeting between LSU and UCLA, both of which have won a national championship in the past 15 years. LSU holds a 3-2 edge in the series. The last game between the two occurred at the 2013 CWS, where the unranked Bruins beat the No. 4 Tigers 2-1 in the first round on their way to their first and only national championship in program history.

About three hours after the LSU-UCLA game entered a weather delay, the matchup has officially been pushed back a day, with rain and thunderstorms continuing throughout the Omaha area.

The NCAA announced that the game will resume at 11 a.m. ET on Tuesday, June 17. It isn’t scheduled to impact the start time of the other two CWS games, with Oregon State-Louisville still set for a 2 p.m. ET first pitch and Arkansas against the loser of the LSU-UCLA game beginning at 7 p.m. ET.

The game between LSU and UCLA at the College World Series has been delayed for close to an hour and the inclement weather that caused it doesn’t appear to be letting up any time soon.

According to a forecast from The Weather Channel, thunderstorms are projected in the Omaha area until around 1 a.m. ET.

Due to what was described as “severe weather in the area,” LSU’s game against UCLA in the College World Series has been delayed.

With a single swing of the bat, LSU doubles its lead. Luis Hernandez singles up the middle with runners on first and second and two outs, sending home teammate Ethan Frey from second base.

Tigers with a 5-3 lead in the bottom of the third.

After walking the first two batters in the bottom of the third inning, UCLA pulls starter Landon Stump, replacing him with left-hander Chris Grothues. Stump leaves the game with four hits, two walks, no strikeouts and, for now, four earned runs.

The Bruins fail to get a runner on in the top of the third inning, with UCLA going down in order.

LSU follows up its 4-run first inning with three up and three down in the second inning, including a pair of groundouts.

After getting three runs in a chaotic first inning, UCLA comes up scoreless its second time up to the plate. With a runner on second base and two outs, All-American shortstop Roch Cholowsky strikes out swinging on a nasty pitch from Anthony Eyanson.

After Gage Wood’s no-hit masterpiece for Arkansas against Murray State, we’ve got some offense in Omaha. LSU takes a 4-3 lead into the second inning, making it the highest-scoring first inning of the 2025 NCAA tournament.

It turns out that Jake Brown’s RBI single was only the start of an offensive onslaught for LSU.

During the following at-bat, and with runners still on first and third, Jared Jones hits a shot to right field that just barely clears the wall, with AJ Salgado just missing out on what would have been a run-saving grab.

With Jones’ dinger, LSU takes a 4-3 lead.

Staring at an early 3-run deficit, LSU’s lineup is getting to work. With runners on first and third with one out, Jake Brown cashes in, slipping a single into right center field to cut UCLA’s lead to 3-1.

The Bruins couldn’t have asked for a better start.

With runners on first and second, Roman Martin rips a double down the left-field line, bringing home a run. In the next at-bat, AJ Salgado gets an infield single to bring home another run. Immediately after that, a soft grounder down the first-base line from Payton Brennan brings Martin home from third to stretch the lead to 3-0 heading into the bottom of the first inning.

Here’s a look at the lineup LSU will roll out Monday against UCLA in the College World Series:

Here’s who the Bruins will be putting out on the field as they seek to extend their unbeaten NCAA tournament run:

The Tigers will be turning to pitcher Anthony Eyanson as they aim to take another step closer to a national championship. Eyanson, a junior right-hander, is 11-2 this season with a 2.74 ERA, 142 strikeouts and just 35 walks.

UCLA will hand the ball to sophomore right-hander Landon Stump, who is 6-1 this season with a 4.54 ERA, 62 strikeouts and 37 walks.

Prediction from the Lafayette Daily Advertiser: LSU 9, UCLA 2

Of the matchup, LSU beat reporter Cory Diaz writes:

After a near-silent performance in their CWS opener, the LSU bats wake up against the Bruins. Ethan Frey, Jake Brown and Luis Hernandez all turn in run-producing at-bats and provide plenty of run support for the LSU pitching staff. LSU scores early and often and UCLA can’t keep up.
