The Los Angeles Angels have recently returned southpaw Garrett McDaniels to the Los Angeles Dodgers after he cleared waivers.

McDaniels was first acquired by the Angels by way of the Rule 5 Draft this past offseason.
The Rule 5 Draft is a way for players who have spent considerable time in the minor leagues — specifically a player signed at 18 years old or younger spending five seasons not yet promoted to a 40-man roster or signed 19 years old and older having spent four seasons in a team’s farm system — to be acquired and added to a 26-man roster of another team.
Not every team will make a selection in these drafts held every December, but those that do pay $100,000 to the team of the player they select. The player is immediately assigned to the 26-man roster and is placed on waivers if removed before a full season has passed.
If this happens, as was the case with McDaniels, the player is offered back to his previous club for $50,000 upon clearing waivers.
As for the southpaw’s performance, he made just 10 appearances for the Halos with an ERA of 5.91. He tossed six strikeouts and allowed eight walks during this brief stint.
In Triple-A and the Arizona Complex League, McDaniels tossed 7.1 innings, allowing five earned runs in the process.
Across 32 appearances last season in Single-A, High-A, and Double-A in the Dodgers’ farm system, McDaniels had a 3.19 ERA across 73.1 innings of work. He added 84 strikeouts to go along with 29 walks for the organization he now heads back to.
