Trade Idea Moves Brewers’ Rhys Hoskins to Red Sox originally appeared on Athlon Sports.

The Boston Red Sox are still looking for an everyday baseman after their Opening Day starter at the position suffered a season-ending injury.

On May 2, Triston Casas, who has since landed on the 60-day injured list, tore the patellar tendon in his left knee after slipping on first base while trying to leg out an infield hit. Romy González and Abraham Toro have been patrolling first base in a platoon capacity since then. Still, the Red Sox’s need for production at the position has only intensified after their efforts to coax Rafael Devers to move there proved to be unsuccessful.

NESN.com’s Owen Crisafulli proposes that the Red Sox could find their man in Milwaukee Brewers first baseman Rhys Hoskins. This slugger could replace the recently departed Devers’ contributions at the plate.

“Enter Milwaukee Brewers first baseman Rhys Hoskins, who was getting linked to Boston even before Devers was dealt. Hoskins, who is in the final year of his contract, is hitting .245 with 10 home runs and 37 RBIs for the Brewers so far this season,” Crisafulli wrote.

“Milwaukee is in the playoff hunt for now, but the team is reportedly considering moving on from Hoskins if they end up falling out of the race. That could lead the Red Sox to not only trade for him, but also potentially extend him to fill Devers’ void at designated hitter moving forward.”

Hoskins is in the midst of his second season with the Brewers after signing with the club as a free agent ahead of the 2024 season. In his time with the Brewers, Hoskins is a .224 hitter with 36 home runs, 119 RBIs, 23 doubles, and a .731 OPS across 200 appearances.

Before joining the Brewers, he spent the first seven years of his MLB career with the Philadelphia Phillies. Hoskins is credited with 184 home runs, 524 RBIs, a .238 batting average, a .821 OPS, and 11.7 WAR (according to Baseball Reference) in the big leagues. He also led the National League in walks (116) in 2019.
