Arkansas baseball found a way to survive and advance from a second College World Series elimination game in as many days, taking down No. 15 UCLA 7-3 to force a rematch with No. 6 LSU on Wednesday night.
Razorback ace Zach Root returned to the mound on just two days of rest, bouncing back from a rough outing against the Tigers on Saturday to deliver five scoreless innings. The southpaw struck out five Bruin batters while walking two and allowing three hits. It wasn’t always smooth sailing for the junior, as he had to work through jams in the first and fifth innings, but he was able to get out of both unscathed. Right-hander Aidan Jimenez followed it up with three scoreless innings out of the bullpen, only allowing a single hit.
By that point, Arkansas’ bats had broken the game open, but it took them a while to wake up. Heading into the seventh inning stretch, Wehiwa Aloy’s two-run homer and RBI triple had brought home the Hogs’ only runs up to that point, leaving the Bruins within striking distance. Right fielder Logan Maxwell finally gave the Hawaiian slugger some help in the bottom of the seventh with a two-RBI double off the wall in left center. In the eighth, Cam Kozeal scooted home on a wild pitch before Justin Thomas Jr. continued his hot streak by roping a double down the left field line.
By the time the dust settled, the Razorbacks held a commanding 7-0 lead. That allowed Arkansas baseball coach Dave Van Horn to let Jimenez hit the showers an inning early and turn to super senior Will McEntire to finish things off. But the ninth inning was a sloppy one for the Hogs. A leadoff triple, errors from McEntire and Brent Iredale and a wild pitch allowed UCLA to plate three runs before the coffin was sealed shut. But outside of the final frame, it was a convincing and complete performance for the Razorbacks.
Now, No. 3 Arkansas will face LSU for the second time in this MCWS and the fifth time overall this season. The Tigers are 4-1 in those matchups, with a moral victory in the regular season series finale the only solace for the Hogs. But setting aside a 13-3 run-rule drubbing in Baton Rouge, Arkansas has been within three runs in the other three losses to the Bayou Bengals.
In the locker room after the game, most Razorback players were very humble and reserved when asked about the chance at a rematch with LSU, saying that they’d like the chance to flip some of those close losses into a win on Wednesday night. But catcher Ryder Helfrick went further than that, openly advocating for revenge against the rival Tigers.
“I think we wanted revenge a little bit,” Helfrick said on SEC Now postgame, admitting the chance of a grudge match served as extra motivation to get past UCLA. “I think it’s exciting to get to play them again.”
It’s unclear who either team will turn to as a starter in Wednesday night’s contest, though Arkansas will likely turn to lefty Landon Beidelschies. LSU has only really burned two arms in Kade Anderson (100 pitches vs Arkansas on Saturday) and Casan Evans (81 pitches across two outings), and it holds a slight pitching advantage after playing one less game than the Hogs.
Arkansas has spent Root, Gabe Gaeckle and no-hit hero Gage Wood, all of whom have thrown 90 or more pitches in the MCWS so far. Both teams will have to get creative with starting pitching, but LSU has the possibility of throwing All-SEC right-hander Anthony Eyanson after his Monday night start was cut short by a weather delay.
With their backs against the wall, the Razorbacks will have to channel some of Helfrick’s thirst for vengeance to take down the Tigers twice in the next two days.
