The West Island Royals rally fell short against the Suroit Voltigeurs as the Volts took an 11-9 decision over the Royals at Dorval’s Ballantyne Park in Lac St. Louis Region baseball. In their last at bats, the Royals had a two out rally and were down by only two runs with the bases jammed but Suroit’s Louis Provencher coming on to get the final out and the save.

It was a game in two parts as the first four innings presented a pitchers’ duel with the visitors taking a slim 2-0 lead into the fifth inning. Following that, there was an explosion of runs over the final two innings to build to the 11-9 final score.

Suroit opened the scoring in the top of the fourth when Maksim Leduc tripled and scored on a sacrifice fly. Marquis Richard raced home on a double by Loïk Boursier to make it 2-0. The Voltigeurs added four runs to their total in the top of the fifth. Suroit rapped out back-to-back-to-back doubles scoring Charles-Éric Tremblay and Justin Leduc. Provencher earned two rbi’s with his single scoring Leduc and Antoine Lariviere to put Suroit up 6-0.

Nikolas Hebert had the lone run of the top of the sixth for the Volts, making it a 7-0 contest. West Island gained some traction in the bottom of that inning posting four runs to cut into the Voltigeurs lead. A combination of a pair of hits and Suroit miscues with some steals sprinkled in allowed Olivier Leroux, Matthew Lee, Cam Nancekevill and Jacob Jacques to make the score 7-4.

Suroit responded in their final at bats with four runs to extend their lead to 11-4. Richard, Boursier, Tristan Caty-Leduc and Tremblay rounded out the Volts scoring. Severin Annis singled, earning him his second and third rbi’s of the game as Nancekevill and Jacques touched home, Annis would go on to score the third run of the inning. Joe Downey and Trevor Bain reached home on a single off the bat of Ryan Spencer to make it an 11-9 match. With the bases loaded and the potential winning run on first, Provencher got a game ending groundout. n
