The Yankees’ inability to score continued on Tuesday night, as they were shut out once again in a loss to the Angels. With the streak now numbering 29 consecutive innings without scoring a run, the Yankees are in danger of making some inauspicious history should it happen again tonight. The franchise record is 37 innings, which was set by the 1908 Highlanders, who are on the shortlist for the worst team in franchise history.
Can the Yankees avoid that fate, and more importantly, can they just score in general tonight against the Angels?
Despite the Yankees’ struggles, they’re not doing anything off the wall with the lineup for tonight’s clash. It’s a fairly normal-looking one, albeit with Ben Rice getting his first career MLB start at catcher after six previous late appearances in blowouts. Aaron Boone hinted this would happen at some point with Giancarlo Stanton back in the fold at DH and the desire to keep finding spots for Rice beyond first base, typically occupied by Paul Goldschmidt. J.C. Escarra has backed up Austin Wells in all other starts this year; now, Rice will get a chance.
Ryan Yarbrough will be on the mound for the Bombers. After getting hit around by the Red Sox back in the Bronx on June 7th, he bounced back a bit in Boston last weekend, although he only lasted 4.2 innings. The 33-year-old has recorded a 3.96 ERA in 50 innings on the season, and 8 of his 22 runs around came in the awful start on June 7th.
Jack Kochanowicz will get the start for the Angels. He comes into this game sporting a 5.53 ERA and a 5.62 FIP, although that certainly hasn’t mattered for the Yankees’ struggles recently. He has the highest ERA and FIP among all American League pitchers with at least 70 innings under their belt.
We hope you’ll come join us in the game thread as the Yankees look to end our long national nightmare, so here’s everything to know for how to catch the action.
