Los Angeles Dodgers owner Mark Walter is buying a majority stake of the Los Angeles Lakers from the Buss family, ESPN’s Shams Charania reports.

Jerry Buss bought the Lakers in 1979 for $67.5 million. When he passed away, he passed ownership onto his children. Now, Jeanie Buss is selling majority interest of the team, but will maintain her standing as Governor after the sale.
As for Walter, he’s been a minority stakeholder in the Lakers since 2021, but has interests in multiple professional sports organizations, including the Dodgers, Los Angeles Sparks, the Billie Jean Cup, Cadillac Formula 1 team and the Professional Women’s Hockey League.
Who is Mark Walter?
Walter, 65, was born Jan. 1, 1960 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He went Creighton University for undergrad, and then graduated from Northwestern University Law School in 1985.
Walter, the CEO of Guggenheim Partners, bought the Dodgers in 2012 with Guggenheim Baseball Management for $2.15 billion.
The Dodgers have made the postseason every year since 2013, winning 11 of 12 division titles.
They have made four World Series appearances, winning two rings (2020, 2024).
How Much is Mark Walter Buying the Lakers For?
According to Charania, Walter is purchasing majority ownership of the Lakers for a valuation of approximately $10 billion, the largest sale of a professional sports franchise in the world.
