The Mariners face off against the Red Sox in today’s rubber match before an off day and then a long, punishing road trip. Also, it’s staff writer Jake Parr’s birthday, say happy birthday to Jakey or maybe just look at a picture of a tall sailing ship in his honor.

Lineups:

Well. That is technically a lineup.

  News:

Per Dan Wilson, Luke Raley will play another game in Tacoma today, going back-to-back nine-inning games as he continues to get his timing back. Last night in a 6-1 win he had a hit and a walk in four plate appearances with no strikeouts; the hit was a pull-side homer.

Captain’s Log:

Dan Wilson on the tough stretch ahead for the Mariners (10-day road trip followed by seven-day homestand with no off-days):

“I don’t think it doe a lot of good to think ahead too far, but you do want to look ahead in terms of guys getting rest and whatnot, planning that way. But I think our guys do a really good job of staying in the moment and understanding that each game has an importance of its own, and you have to be ready for what the game brings..”

1978: The Mariners defeat the Red Sox, 3-2, at Fenway Park. Glenn Abbott pitched a complete game for the Mariners in the victory.

1989: The Mariners beat the Blue Jays at the SkyDome, 8-2. Every member of the starting lineup reached base; Edgar Martínez has two hits, his second double of the season and his second home run; he would not hit another home run that season, moving between the big-league club and Triple-A Calgary.

2002: The Mariners face former teammate and current Cincinnati Reds outfielder Ken Griffey Jr. for the first time since Griffey was traded to Cincy in Feb. of 2000. The Mariners win the game 8-1 in their first-ever meeting against the Reds.

2023: Lance Lynn sets a club record for most strikeouts by a White Sox pitcher since 1954, with 16, but eventually is forced to depart the game at 113 pitches and the Mariners go on to score three more runs against the bullpen on a bases-loaded Jarred Kelenic triple, winning 5-1. Bryce Miller earned his fifth win of his rookie season, keeping the White Sox to just one run over seven innings.
