The Cardinals’ game Wednesday against the Chicago White Sox was postponed due to rain in the Chicago area.
The two teams will play a straight doubleheader on Thursday with the first game at 1:10 p.m. and the second game to follow about 30-45 minutes after the first.
It will be the Cardinals’ sixth doubleheader of the season but their first straight doubleheader, which have become somewhat rare in recent years.
Below is the preview for Wednesday’s game as it appeared before the rainout was announced.
In his year and a half with the Cardinals, Sonny Gray has been two different pitchers depending on ballpark.
Gray and the Cardinals face the White Sox at 6:40 p.m. Wednesday in the second of three in Chicago. There is rain in the Chicago area and chances of precipitation are forecast this afternoon into the early evening.

St. Louis won Tuesday’s opener 12-2, reaching double figures for the first time in a month after doing so six times in their first 48 games.
The right-hander Gray (7-2, 3.84 ERA) has a 2.81 ERA at Busch Stadium since joining the Cardinals, putting him among the better starting pitchers at home over that time.
On the road, however, it’s been a different story. Among starters who have pitched at least 90 road innings since the start of 2024, only five have a worse ERA than Gray’s 5.38.
This season, nine of his 14 starts have come at Busch, and six of those nine home starts have been quality. On the road, just two of his five starts have been quality.
Opponents are hitting .284 against Gray on the road vs. just .245 at home.
Even more confounding, four of his five road starts in 2025 have come at parks that rank in the bottom half offensively by Statcast’s Park Factors.
Chicago’s Rate Field is the 19th-most hitter friendly park.
For his career, however, Gray sports slightly better road ERA than at home, though he hasn’t been better on the road over a full season since 2021.
The White Sox will send out rookie right-hander Sean Burke (3-7, 4.71 ERA), who is coming off the worst start of his career. He gave up seven earned runs while failing to finish the fourth inning at Houston a week ago.
The Cardinals are 38-35, tied for third in the National League Central.
The White Sox are 23-50 overall, the worst record in the American League. They have lost six straight, three of them by one run.
