The Milwaukee Brewers are set to wrap up their six-game road trip this weekend, as they’ll head north to take on the Minnesota Twins in an interleague rivalry matchup. The Crew dropped two of three to the Twins in Milwaukee last month, but the two teams have been on differing trajectories since — the Brewers have gone 17-10, while the Twins have gone 10-16.
The Brewers are in the process of wrapping up their three-game (but ultimately two-game) set with the Cubs, while the Twins are finishing up with their series against the Reds in Cincinnati.
Brandon Woodruff, Nestor Cortes, Garrett Mitchell, and Blake Perkins remain the headliners of the injured list, with Woodruff and Mitchell likely the first ones back in the coming weeks. Perkins could return in early July, with Cortes behind him around the All-Star break.
For Minnesota, third baseman Royce Lewis has struggled to stay healthy his entire career, and that’s the case right now as he deals with another hamstring injury. Pitcher Pablo López suffered a muscle strain and will be out until at least August, while pitcher Zebby Matthews and infielder Luke Keaschall also find themselves on the IL.
The Brewers’ offense is led by Christian Yelich (.242/.324/.431 with a team-high 14 homers and 44 RBIs), Jackson Chourio (.260/.284/.457 with 12 homers, 20 doubles, three triples, 42 RBIs, 44 runs, and 13 steals), and Sal Frelick (.287/.349/.390 with 14 steals), with Rhys Hoskins, William Contreras, and Brice Turang also adding plus value. As a team, the Brewers are hitting .237/.314/.367 (.681 OPS ranks 24th) with 68 homers (tied for 24th), 323 runs scored (12th), and 90 steals (third).
Byron Buxton leads the Twins with 15 homers, 45 RBIs, 43 runs, and a perfect 12-for-12 in steals. Trevor Larnach has added 10 homers, while Willi Castro is hitting .288/.370/.473 with seven homers and 32 runs scored. As a team, the Twins are hitting .243/.313/.394 (.707 OPS ranks 16th) with 80 homers (13th), 311 runs scored (18th), and 36 steals (27th).
Abner Uribe and Jared Koenig remain atop the Brewers’ leaderboard in terms of appearances, though Uribe’s 1.31 ERA and 44 strikeouts also lead the bullpen. Nick Mears, Grant Anderson, Trevor Megill, DL Hall, Aaron Ashby, and Rob Zastryzny have also been solid this year. As a staff, the Brewers have a 3.82 ERA (13th), including a 3.43 starter ERA (fifth) and a 4.26 reliever ERA (21st). They’ve struck out 612 batters (tied for 13th) over 657 1⁄3 innings.
Louis Varland leads the Twins’ bullpen with 35 appearances, sporting a 2.16 ERA and 38 strikeouts over 33 1⁄3 innings. Jhoan Duran is 10-for-12 in save opportunities with 39 strikeouts in 33 innings, while Griffin Jax leads the team in strikeouts out of the ‘pen with 52 in just 31 innings. Cole Sands, Justin Topa, Danny Coulombe, and Brock Stewart have also been strong. As a staff, the Twins have a 3.92 ERA (17th), including a 3.98 starter ERA (17th) and a 3.75 reliever ERA (15th). They’ve struck out 636 batters (10th) over 645 2⁄3 innings.
Probable Pitchers
Friday, June 20 @ 7:10 p.m.: Jacob Misiorowski (0.00 ERA, 3.48 FIP) vs. Joe Ryan (2.93 ERA, 3.44 FIP)
Misiorowski was originally scheduled to pitch in Wednesday’s rained-out game against the Cubs, but he flips places with Freddy Peralta in the rotation, as Peralta started on Thursday. The Miz is coming off his first career start last Thursday, a game where he went five-plus scoreless innings against the Cardinals. He struck out five and allowed four walks and no hits in that outing, picking up his first career MLB win as Milwaukee won 5-0. Through 14 appearances (13 starts) between Triple-A and MLB this season, he now has a sub-2.00 ERA (1.98) with 85 strikeouts and 35 walks over 68 1⁄3 innings. This is his first career start against the Twins.
Ryan, 29, is in his fifth MLB season (all with the Twins) and is quietly enjoying the best year of his career. Through just 14 appearances (13 starts), he’s already compiled a career-high 2.5 bWAR as he sports a 2.93 ERA, 3.44 FIP, and 89 strikeouts across 80 innings. He won three consecutive starts before taking a no-decision against the Astros in his last start. He went seven innings in that one, allowing two runs on two hits and two walks with seven strikeouts. He’s made three career appearances against the Brewers, with a 2.60 ERA and 18 strikeouts over 17 1⁄3 innings. That includes six scoreless innings with nine strikeouts in a win over Milwaukee back in May.
Saturday, June 21 @ 1:10 p.m.: Jose Quintana (3.35 ERA, 4.60 FIP) vs. Simeon Woods Richardson (5.13 ERA, 4.71 FIP)
Quintana has been great through nine starts with Milwaukee, with a 3.35 ERA, 4.60 FIP, and 35 strikeouts across 48 1⁄3 innings. While the strikeouts haven’t been there, he’s been great at limiting the damage in sticky situations. He did struggle in his last start against the Cardinals, allowing seven runs (five earned) on eight hits and three walks with four strikeouts over 4 1⁄3 innings. He’s made 22 starts against the Twins in his career, with a 3.93 ERA and 129 strikeouts over 132 2⁄3 innings. He made one start against them last year while with the Mets, allowing one run and striking out five over six innings of work.
Woods Richardson, 24, is in his fourth MLB season (all with the Twins), though he hasn’t been able to put together any sort of consistent success. Through 10 appearances (nine starts) this season, he has a 5.13 ERA, 4.71 FIP, and 43 strikeouts across 47 1⁄3 innings. He went five scoreless frames against the Astros last time out, striking out four and allowing just one hit and one walk in a no-decision. This marks his first career appearance against Milwaukee.
Sunday, June 22 @ 1:10 p.m.: Quinn Priester (3.46 ERA, 4.06 FIP) vs. David Festa (4.78 ERA, 4.55 FIP)
Priester has been everything the Brewers could have hoped for when they acquired him back in April, as he’s made 13 appearances (nine starts) with a 3.46 ERA, 4.06 FIP, and 46 strikeouts over 67 2⁄3 innings this season. He’s picked up the win in each of his last four outings and has allowed three runs or fewer in each of his last eight outings. He went six innings against the Cardinals in his last start, allowing one run and striking out three in a 3-2 victory. This marks his first career appearance against Minnesota
Festa, 25, is in his second season, as he made 14 appearances (13 starts) last season. He’s made six starts this year, with a 4.78 ERA, 4.55 FIP, and 29 strikeouts across 26 1⁄3 innings. He also took a no-decision in his last start, spanning 3 2⁄3 innings against the Reds, as he allowed four runs (two earned) on two hits and three walks with four strikeouts. It wasn’t a very efficient outing, as he threw 81 pitches, right around his average pitch count this season. This marks his first career appearance against Milwaukee.

Prediction
With the Twins sitting right around .500 and still in the hunt in what’s turned out to be a deep AL Central, this will be another tough road battle for Milwaukee. I’ll still take the Crew to win two of three at Target Field before they return home.
