KANE — The DuBois Minor League All-Star baseball team beat Mother Nature and Kane/Smethport/Mt. Jewett (KSMJ) to come away with a convincing 15-0, 3-inning victory in the District 10 Tournament opener for both teams.
The DuBois duo of Wyatt Lee and Rory Marshall teamed up to no hit KSMJ, although the pair did work around a combined seven walks.
Lee got the opening day start and tossed two innings to get the win. He struck out five and walked five. Marshall came on to throw the final inning and used three strikeouts to offset a pair of walks.
With Lee and Marshall silencing the KSMJ bats, DuBois’ offense went right to work to get the lead and exploded for six runs in the bottom of the first and nine more in the second to put the 15-run mercy rule into play. DuBois posted eight hits overall.
Macklin Mays led that attack, going 2-for-2 with three RBIs and a pair of runs scored. Emerson Reiter had a hit and three RBIs, while Jude Bowley had a hit and two RBIs.
Lee walked the bases loaded with two outs in the first but used three strikeouts to hold KSMJ at by and not allow the hosts to grab the early lead.
Instead, it was DuBois which seized the momentum with its big six-run bottom of the first.
Tyson Hilliard and Krew Liddle started that rally with walks before Emerson Reiter singled home both to give DuBois a quick 2-0 lead.
Marshall then reached on an error, bringing Mays to the plate and he ripped a two-run single to right to double the lead to 4-0. Liam Kulbatsky kept the rally going with a walk.
Marshall and Kulbatsky both later scored on passed balls to make it 6-0 after one inning.
Lee then used three more strikeouts to work out of another bases loaded situation before DuBois put the game away with its huge nine-run second.
Malcolm Orcutt jump-started the inning with a leadoff single, while Liam Hartzfeld walk. Bowley promptly scores both with a triple to right. Hilliard followed with a double to plate Bowley, while a single by Liddle brought in Hilliard for a 10-0 lead.
DuBois was far from done scoring in the inning though.
Reiter reached on an error that scored Liddle before Marshall singled. Mays’ second hit of the day chased home Reiter, while Marshall later scored on a passed ball.
DuBois finished off the big inning when Mays stole home as part of a double-steal with Collin Roman, who had walked. Roman then stole himself to score DuBois’ fifth and final run.
DuBois then turned to Marshall on the mound in the third, he finished off the no-hitter and shutout by recording three strikeouts around a pair of walks.
With the win, DuBois moved on in the winner’s bracket and plays host to Warren on Saturday at 4 p.m.
