DANVILLE — Landon Nagle and Ayden Stevenson clubbed run-scoring doubles in a five-run first inning, and Jordan Smucker pitched five innings of five-hit baseball as the Shikellamy Junior Division all-stars opened tournament play with a 14-3 win over Mifflinburg on Wednesday at the Washies Athletic Complex.
The West Branch all-stars from Milton held an 11-2 lead on Snyder County and was batting in the top fourth inning when play was halted.
The District 13 Junior Division tournament was originally scheduled to begin on Saturday, but it was continually postponed by inclement weather and unplayable field conditions.
Shikellamy (1-0) made up for lost time Wednesday, getting its first five batters on base and surging to a four-run lead before Mifflinburg recorded an out. Kyler Campbell was hit by a pitch to open the game before stealing second base and scoring on Chandler Bauman’s single. Smucker reached on an error, and both he and Bauman scored on a Max Barner single. Nagle followed with an RBI double to left field for a 4-0 lead. Stevenson made it 5-0 with a one-out double.
Shikellamy scored in every inning after the second, posting pairs of runs in the fourth and fifth innings, and four more in the sixth. Lane Brown had a two-run single in the sixth.
Smucker struck out four and walked one while allowing three runs in five innings. Barner threw a hitless inning of relief with a strikeout and a walk.
Matthew Weikel knocked in all three Mifflinburg runs with a first-inning groundout and a two-run single with two outs in the third. Griffin Walls went 2-for-2 and scored twice in the loss.
Shikellamy will face Danville, which received a bye, in a winner’s bracket game Thursday at 5 p.m. Mifflinburg (0-1) will play Friday in an elimination game.
Milton broke open the nightcap with an eight-run rally in the third inning before the rain. Cooper Crawford ripped a two-run single in the spree, helping to stake pitcher Brody Locke to a nine-run lead.
Owen Mowery went 2-for-2 and scored twice, matching teammates Kobe Cordetsky and Ryker King with two runs.
Jaden Gantt doubled for Snyder County, while Rodney Heim drove in a third-inning run.
