The Texas Rangers scored six runs while the Pittsburgh Pirates scored two runs.
I would imagine Jacob deGrom hasn’t allowed five consecutive two-out base runners very many times in his career, if ever, but that’s what happened in the bottom of the fourth in tonight’s contest. That rare hiccup that included four singles and a walk allowed the Pirates to score their two runs tonight.
Otherwise, deGrom was good. Besides that fourth inning, he allowed just one more hit all evening while striking out seven on 84 pitches, which spanned six innings of work.
While deGrom was mostly shoving, the Rangers supported the legendary veteran with a quick first inning 2-0 lead and then a run each in the fourth, fifth, and seventh, and ninth innings.
After going most of the season thus far as one of the worst road teams in baseball, with the win tonight, the Rangers have now won five of their last seven contests away from Arlington.
Player of the Game: The main support for deGrom was Adolis Garcia in a vintage do-everything superstar kind of performance that has been rarer of late but was certainly a welcome sight.
In addition to several excellent tumbling plays in right field, El Bombi connected for his ninth dinger of the year and nearly hit another that went for a double. All told, Garcia went 3-for-4 with the two extra base hits, a walk, two runs scored, and two RBIs.
Up Next: The Rangers and Pirates are back at it tomorrow afternoon with RHP Kumar Rocker set to pitch for Texas against RHP Mitch Keller for Pittsburgh.
The Saturday first pitch from PNC Park is scheduled for 3:05 pm CT and will be back on the Rangers Sports Network.
