The Colorado Rockies’ four-game winning streak was ended via a heartbreaking walk-off loss to the Nationals yesterday.

Now they return to their hometown of Denver to play host to the division rival Arizona Diamondbacks over the weekend. You’d be forgiven for thinking the series was taking place in AZ, though, given the sweltering temperatures that will be reached throughout the three games.

Friday evening’s opening contest should at least be livable. That’s when Austin Gomber (0-0, 0.00 ERA) will make his second start of the season. Last time out, he tossed five strong shutout innings against the Atlanta Braves, setting his team up for what would become a lopsided win. He’ll look for similar results against the Snakes, a team that’s given him issues in the past as evidenced by his 5.65 ERA in 14 career appearances.

Gomber will work especially hard to keep Ketel Marte and Randal Grichuk quiet, as both are hitting over .330 against him.

Standing opposite Gomber is Zac Gallen (4-8, 5.19 ERA), who hasn’t looked like his dominant self this season. Gallen has struggled somewhat this season, allowing at least four runs in six of his last seven starts. That includes his most recent start against the Rockies on May 17th, a 14-12 slugfest that resulted in a Colorado victory.

That contest saw the Rox collect 19 hits, which stands as the most in a game this season for them. Hopefully they’ll find similar success in tonight’s affair.

Keep an eye on Colorado’s top three of their lineup. Jordan Beck, Tyler Freeman, and Hunter Goodman are hitting .279, .396, and .344, respectively, in the month of June.
