DEFIANCE — After losing its opening game of the Prep Baseball Report Tournament, Napoleon American Legion Post #300 split a pair of pool-play games Friday morning at Defiance High School.

In the opening game Friday, the River Bandits fell to the Great Lakes Bombers 5-4 when the Bombers scored a run in the bottom of the seventh inning to break a tie.

Both teams scored three runs in the fourth inning and they each added a run in the fifth.

Napoleon was led by Noah Gomez (Defiance), who was 2 for 4. Hunter Bostelman (Tinora) added a two-run single for the Bandits’ only other hit in the game.

Brady Borton (Defiance) and Mason McQuillin (Tinora) each had an RBI.

Ryan Maag (Ayersville) took the loss, pitching 1 1/3 innings of relief and allowing one run on three hits and a walk. Cory Herman (Edgerton) started on the mound, going 4 2/3 innings and allowing four runs on eight hits and three walks, while striking out two.

Napoleon broke a 1-all tie, scoring four runs in the fifth inning in the second game against the Michigan Bulls Friday. The Bandits added four runs in the seventh inning for a 9-2 win.

Kenneth Smeltzer (Montpelier) had a three-run home run, while Zander Zeiter (Liberty Center) added a solo blast for Napoleon. Landon Amstutz (Liberty Center) had three hits and scored a pair of runs, while Gomez and Borton each had two hits.

Owen Espinoza (Napoleon) was the winning pitcher, going 6 2/3 innings. He allowed two runs on nine hits and three walks, while striking out four.

On Thursday, Napoleon fell to the Detroit Metro Stars 3-1 in a game played at Mercy Field in Toledo.

The Bandits scored a run in the second inning to take an early lead, but the Metro Stars tallied three runs in the sixth inning for the win.

Gomez led Napoleon with two hits, while Alec Schaublin (Tinora) had an RBI double. Parker Woods (Napoleon) also had a hit for the Bandits.

Greyson Harder (Paulding) took the loss, going six innings and allowing three runs on eight hits and no walks, while striking out four.

Napoleon completes pool play with a game at Heidleberg University today.
