Seismic change struck the National League West when Boston Red Sox star Rafael Devers was traded to the San Francisco Giants ahead of the team’s series finale with the Los Angeles Dodgers last week.

The deal shocked executives around the league, and it appears that was also the case for the Dodgers front office.

Bill Shaikin of The Los Angeles Times provided insight into the Dodgers’ knowledge of Devers’ availability.

“Andrew Friedman said he never heard from them,” Shaikin writes.

Perhaps, the Dodgers were not contacted by the Red Sox in regards to Devers because he is expected to be a first baseman and designated hitter with San Francisco. Freddie Freeman and Shohei Ohtani occupy those positions in L.A., and so Boston trading Devers to the Dodgers seems far-fetched.

The Dodgers have won 7 of 9 games in a 10-game stretch where the team was tasked with facing the Giants and San Diego Padres twice. The Dodgers currently have a 4.5 game lead on the Giants and a six game lead over the Padres in the division.

Friedman made it abundantly clear winning the NL West is a top priority when the Dodgers cut two of their longest-tenured players in the span of a week. Friedman mentioned the tight division race as a reason for letting go of Chris Taylor and Austin Barnes.

“So the decisions were incredibly difficult. The conversations were tough. But with where we are, the division race, the competition of the roster, everything,” Friedman said in May. “We felt like this was in the Dodgers’ best interest in terms of how to win as many games and put us in a position to best win the World Series this year.”

Now, the Giants have one of the best hitters in baseball. The Dodgers will next face San Francisco and its newest star, Devers, in July.
