Coming off what’s been a rare outstanding offensive performance this month, the Yankees hope to build some momentum and avoid what would be a second straight series loss at home against teams below .500. It hasn’t been a fun time for the Yankees’ offense, but they took advantage of a struggling Zach Eflin, who had just allowed seven runs in his previous outing, and raised the veteran’s ERA to 5.45 on the season.
The benefit of playing a team in the midst of such a disappointing campaign as the Baltimore Orioles is that you get more than one crack at seemingly vulnerable starters. Coincidentally or not, the Yankees will face a starting pitcher on Sunday with roughly the same ERA that Eflin had when he took the ball against the Yankees. Dean Kremer is at 4.80 while Eflin was at 4.81. Unlike Eflin, though, Kremer is coming off a strong performance, allowing just one run in five innings of work, leading Baltimore to a win over Tampa.
Taking the ball for New York, Will Warren will show if that 10+ strikeout performance was a sign of things to come or more of a one-off in terms of K ability. Warren really leaned heavily on the four-seam fastball last time out against the Angels, and all but shelved the changeup, only throwing it three times. Last time Warren faced the Orioles, he wasn’t very successful, giving up four runs in 3.1 innings at Camden Yards.
As a reminder, this special early Sunday game will be unaffected by blackouts and on Roku, which is free, but it will involve tracking that app down in order to watch.
