The New York Mets entered Saturday on a seven-game losing streak, but they remained one of the best teams in baseball even after the skid. With roster improvements clearly necessary at the MLB trade deadline, New York seems to be eyeing two specific positions.

Ken Rosenthal and Will Sammon of The Athletic reported that the club is looking for both center field help and relievers this summer. There are expected to be plenty of relief pitchers available at the MLB trade deadline, but the market for a center field upgrade is a bit more suspect.

New York hasn’t had to use its relievers as much as the Los Angeles Dodgers this year – 331 innings pitched (1st) – but it does have among the busiest bullpens in baseball. Even with reliever Brooks Raley due back in a few weeks, more help would be beneficial.

While there are always plenty of relievers available for trade during the summer, the center field market is more iffy. The Chicago White Sox are very willing to trade Luis Robert Jr, even adding a sweetener, but he has a .630 OPS in 620 plate appearances since Opening Day 2024.

The Boston Red Sox were at one point open to trading Jarren Duran, but that stance might’ve changed following the Rafael Devers trade. Baltimore Orioles outfielder Cedric Mullins could emerge as an option, providing left-handed pop (12 home runs) to the Mets’ lineup. For now, no deals are imminent.
